Trayvon Martin Case
Racial tension and gun violence has been present throughout the history of the U.S., but it has recently been given a spotlight in the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The young African American teenager was visiting his father and went out to the gas station to buy food, while on his way back, he felt like he was being watched and followed. After he decided to run, Trayvon was "confronted, shot, and killed near [the home he was residing in]." Gunman, George Zimmerman, frequently notified the police on many accounts. He supposedly noticed someone "suspicious" in his neighborhood, and Trayvon Martin happened to be that suspicious individual. His murder was evidently a hate crime, due to all the police reports that state that a majority of the suspected individuals Zimmerman spotted were black males. This case acted as a stimulus for people to reunite and attempt to make some change. Many people began losing trust in the system and acknowledging the …show more content…
In response to the recent event, Florida's Frederica Wilson displayed her displeasure during a Congress session in witnessing the youth of her community have their lives ended due to baseless fear. She delivered a speech on behalf of him and other young black males. "I encourage the citizens of Florida and the citizens from around the world to continue to fight for justice for Trayvon Martin. Justice must be served: No more racial profiling. I'm tired of fighting when the evidence is so clear, so transparent..." As the case gradually progresses, more information was released about previous reports George Zimmerman provided. Though new evidence has been released, it was unacceptable for the press and media to openly comment on what was currently going on.     On Feb. 26. 2012, Trayvon Martin, 17, an unarmed black teenager walking back with Skittles and an iced tea he'd picked up at 7-Eleven, and George Zimmerman, a white Hispanic neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida in a community gated housings. Eventually, Martin ran and Zimmerman followed him. Soon enough, they face each other and a witness stated that there was a physical condent and heard screaming from one of them asking for help.
