Traverse City, established in 1839, is the largest producer of tart cherries in the United States producing an estimated 360,000,000 cherries annually. This is 70-75% of all cherries grown in the United States. The National Cherry Festival typically begins the first week in July, and attracts hundreds of thousands of both tourists and locals alike. Although it may seem like a small city, with a population of roughly 14,674 people, it is the largest city in the Northern Michigan Region.
