Rainsford was shocked .On the wall hung human heads, Awful trophies of bad times .Zeke quickly dumped the rest of the gasoline in the library and rushed out. On the way out, he lit a match and threw it on the side of the house. The flames engulfed the wall. In seconds Rainsford noticed flames shooting out the window and thick black smoke pouring out of the roof into the sky. “The building...,” Rainsford began, just as the building exploded into an inferno. Zeke yelled over the noise. “They should be here.” Rainsford thought he heard a plane. Zeke ran towards the beach and set Rainsford down into the warm sand. As Rainsford sat down for breakfast, he asked Ivan to fetch the general. He felt almost sorry for Ivan, and he wondered how it must feel to be deaf-mute, to never have your own life and to always live it under someone else’s control. But Rainsford did not have long to pity Ivan, as the general walked in. Rainsford studied his long, wiry black beard and his unnerving dark black eyes which showed no emotion. A night of sleeping with the dogs had proved very damaging on his appearance, as he had big black bags under his eyes and seemed even more exhausted than what was humanly possible. “Thank you for coming up to breakfast” said Rainsford, trying to keep his voice blank. “Thank you for inviting me” replied the general, his Russian accent thick and emotionless, his black eyes studying Rainsford unnervingly, as though he was studying a rare animal he was about to pounce on. Rainsford refused to be un-nerved by the general, as he knew that he must stand his ground in order for the general to take his proposal seriously. “How was your night?” Rainsford asked, trying to build up conversation. “I have had better nights”,…

The weatherpersons on television, always eager for ratings-boosting disasters, had predicted a fierce autumn storm for New England, with driving rain and high winds. Brad Morris, who worked at home while his wife, Jane, managed a boutique on Boston’s Newbury Street, glanced out his windows now and then at the swaying trees—oaks still tenacious of their rusty leaves, maples letting go in gusts of gold and red—but was unimpressed by the hyped news event. Rain came down heavily a half hour at a time, then pulled back into a silvery sky of fast-moving, fuzzy-bottomed clouds. The worst seemed to be over, when, in midafternoon, his computer died under his eyes. The financial figures he had been painstakingly assembling swooned as a group, sucked into the dead blank screen like glittering water pulled down a drain. Around him, the house seemed to sigh, as all its lights and little engines, its computerized timers and indicators, simultaneously shut down. The sound of wind and rain lashing the trees outside infiltrated the silence. A beam creaked. A loose shutter banged. The drip from a plugged gutter tapped heavily, like a bully nagging for attention, on the wooden cover of a cellar-window well.…

Even though our compound was well up high in the mountains the fall rains came down often and heavy.…
