The theory was developed to address organizational success by developing effective leadership characteristics. The function of a transformational leader is to inspire others, build trust and promote and optimistic, positive and encouraging outlook. Unlike Richardson, Smith believed that transformational leaders should exhibit four important characteristics; being an effective communicator, possessing inspirational traits, having trustworthy character and promoting teamwork. These characteristics are vital for job satisfaction and retention.
