Transformation Manager – A Job with Many Hats
New to many organisational organograms are titles such as Transformation Manager, Transformation Specialist or B-BBEE Champion. Over the past decade the role of driving Transformation has evolved into a tangible function which needs strategic thinking, strong implementation skills and good interpersonal skills. At the risk of sounding cliché, if a Transformation strategy is not imbedded in the culture of an organisation, it will always remain a pre-requisite mandate. To ensure Transformation becomes an intrinsic part of an organisation’s DNA, there needs to be real buy-in and commitment from the top echelons down.
Upon making the decision to employ a Transformation Manager, it is critical that they are fully vetted and equipped with the knowledge to hit the ground running.
What level of competence does a Transformation Manager need?
In order for a Transformation Manager to effectively develop, implement and manage the Transformation process, they should be proficient in the following areas:
• A broad understanding of the current socio-political landscape.
• Ability to recognise the overall benefits of a Transformed nation.
• A clear understanding of the applicable scorecard an organisation is measured on; whether it is the Amended Codes or a specific Sector

    There are three different categories that a manager needs to be aware of in any organization when implementing change. Change in people is first; how implementing change and how people relate to each other effects how an organization functions effectively. Influencing people to change is more dependent on showing them a truth that influences their feelings, rather than shifting their thinking (Kotter & Cohen, 2002, p. 1).
