Juliet: A Tragic Hero
A hero is someone of exceptional courage and strength. A ¨ tragic¨ hero is a great or virtuous character in a dramatic tragedy who is destined for downfall, suffering, or defeat. ¨Romeo and Juliet¨ is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare about two young star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. Juliet is the tragic hero of the story because she fits all the criteria of one.
First, Juliet fell too deep in love Romeo. Her loyalty to him is her strength, but is also the flaw that lead to her tragic end, as she ultimately stabs herself in fear of facing the future without Romeo. At a time period when women obeyed to their fathers or husbands unconditionally, her loyalty has her to defy her father openly. Additionally, it causes Juliet to have mixed feelings upon hearing her cousin Tybalt's death by Romeo's hands. Then she eventually decides to grieve only for Romeo. …show more content…

Also, her loyalty to Romeo makes her to also sever all relationships with her family and friends. Upon hearing the Nurse advise her to forget Romeo and marry Paris, Juliet responds with "Thou and my bosom henceforth shall be twain.” ( 3.5.252)
Secondly, a tragic hero produces catharsis, an emotional purging at the end of the play, in the audience. When Romeo and Juliet find out their love is unacceptable, we cry for the unfairness of life. As well as the many deaths that happened between the two families, we also cry for the tragic end of the double suicide of the two young lovers. This leads to the end of the ancient grudge of the Montagues and the Capulets.
