Tragedy: Oedipus vs Hamlet
Tragedy comes in many forms, for example earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes are all types of tragedies. On the other hand, when talking about tragedy in literature, it has a whole different meaning. Tragedy in literature is on a smaller scale than things like earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes. In literature tragedy is usually about one person and the horrible things that happen to them during their life in a story or play.

Oedipus is the main character in the play Oedipus the King. Oedipus is thought of as a tragic figure because he was doomed from birth. Tiresias, an old blind prophet, told Oedipus' parents about Oedipus' fate. He told them that Oedipus would kill his father and sleep with his mother. So, his parents decided to have him killed, only it did not happen that way. He was passed off by two shepherds and finally to the King and Queen of Corinth, Polybus and Merope to raise him as their own. Oedipus finds his way back to Thebes and on the way kills his father, but Oedipus did not know that one of the men he killed was his real father. This is the beginning of the prophecy coming true. In short Oedipus obtains the throne, Marries his mother and has kids with her. Oedipus' fate has come together without him even realizing what is going on. Eventually he is told what has happened and asks to be banished by his uncle/brother-in-law Creon. The tragedy in Oedipus' life began with his birth and the realization by his parents that his whole life was doomed.

However on the other hand, Hamlet did not know that his life would be a tragic one. Hamlets' fate played out through his whole life. No one knew that hamlet's life would end up the way that it did. Hamlets' life first changed when his Uncle Claudius killed Hamlet's father, the King and Claudius' brother. Claudius just wanted to get to the Queen Gertrude. So he committed the worst sin and killed the King. Claudius weaseled his way into Hamlet Jr.' spot on the throne as King.

Hamlet by William Shakespeare and Oedipus the King by Sophocles are both tragic stories which contain many elements of which are similar and different. Although both Hamlet and Oedipus suffer from fate, Hamlet’s father is murdered by his brother Claudius, while Oedipus kills his own father. Both Hamlet and Oedipus have the opportunity to shun their fate, but the two men believe themselves to be the only individual who can resolve the predicament which they are faced with. The homeland of Hamlet and Oedipus, Denmark and Thebes, are both in a state of tumult. After Hamlet’s father’s death Denmark was presided by a new court, after Claudius, who in addition to murdering Hamlet’s father, became king by marrying his mother, Gertrude. Thebes, on the other hand, was infested with plague and other sickness. Dictated by Oedipus’ brother-in-law, Creon, according to the message from the oracle, the only way to rid Thebes of its death and pestilence was to abolish the individual responsible for Laius’ murder. One of the most significant characteristics in both Hamlet and Oedipus is their individual convictions that it is their solemn duty to rescue their state from destruction.…

When heroes that are tied to destiny feature in literature, they often show signs of arrogance. In Oedipus the King, Sophocles shows how Oedipus’s quest for avoiding his destiny drives him to fulfill without being fully aware of it. When running away he finds himself married to his mother and becoming the king of Thebes. In contrast, in Shakespeare’s Hamlet the main character is visited by the former king and informs him of the new kings doings. As a result the main character is convinced and must seek vengeance for the former king. While there is a fairly large time gap between these two pieces of literature, both explore how the arrogance of one can lead to a tragic outcome and how both Hamlet and Oedipus are tragic heroes. However, whereas Sophocles illustrates the destructive effects of attempting to avoid fate, Shakespeare demonstrates how vengeance can lead to one's self destruction.…

Oedipus, the tragic hero of the play, is a proud man who reveals his drive to evade his cruel fate in how quickly and excessively he reacts upon hearing the prophecy of an incestuous relationship with his mother and patricide the gods had designed for him. He “[flees] away, putting stars/ Between [him] and Corinth, never to see home again” (Sophocles, 47) and murders a group of travelers who took notice of him, an undue precaution. By flying from his home in Corinth he hopes to foil the god’s plan by excommunicating those who he believes to be his parents. Oedipus finds refuge in Thebes and makes a rash decision. He sets up an obstacle to an incestuous relationship with his mother by marrying another, Jocasta, unaware that she is his mother. A committed relationship would make it socially unacceptable and morally distasteful to him to have relations with any other woman than one he is married to. Unfortunately for Oedipus what he believes is not true for he is ignorant of his true lineage. His Corinthian mother is his adoptive mother, Jocasta being his…

The play starts with the presentation of the main character: Oedipus, the king of Thebes. Sophocles presents Oedipus to the reader as a majestic figure who addresses his attention to the people of Thebes from his palace. The city had been hit by a devastating plague due to Laïos (the previous Theban king) murder and Oedipus was believed to be able to help them overcome that hardship. As the play develops, the reader is provided with the fact that Laïos, Oedipus' biological father, and Iocastê, his biological mother, learned through an oracle that Oedipus was fated to kill his father. Laïos decided to kill his son and Iocastê ties their child's feet together. Oedipus was given to a shepherd to be sent to death, however, the shepherd, pitied the baby and changed his mind, handling the infant to a servant of Polybos, the King of Corinth. Oedipus was raised as Polybos son and never knew, despite his suspicions, that he, in fact, was not Polybos' biological child. During this sincere search for his true identity, he asked to the Delphi Oracle about his real parents. The Oracle did not provide him with the answer Oedipus was searching for, but told him he was doomed to kill his father and mate his own mother instead. Later, Oedipus met Laïos and, ignoring that he was his biological father, ended up killing him over an argument on the road to Thebes. Because he solved the Sphinx's riddle, Oedipus was rewarded with Thebes' kingship and the hand of the Theban queen, Iocastê, his biological mother. At this point, he demanded that the shepherd was brought to him and his search for the truth has ended: he found out he was Laïos' and Iocastê's son. When she figured out she was Oedipus' biological mother, Iocastê committed suicide and Oedipus struck his eyes with…

While Oedipus was a baby, his parents, King Laius and Queen Jocasta, abandoned him. King Polybus and Queen Merope of Corinth end up adopted and raising him. Later in his life, Oedipus speaks with a prophet who reveals his fate; he will kill his father and marry his mother. In an attempt to avoid this prophecy, Oedipus flees from Corinth. This is the first instance where Oedipus demonstrates his irrational and obstinate attitude. Instead of trying to confront and/or understand his fate, he runs from it. Coincidentally, Oedipus runs into his fate when he intersects King Laius and his men on the road. One of the horsemen insults Oedipus and they engage in a fight. Oedipus fulfills the prophecy by killing all of those men, including King Laius. Once again, if Oedipus would have been able to keep his composure, he may have been able to work through this problem. Perhaps if he spoke with those men and realized that King Laius was among them, his actions would not have been fatal.…
