Trader Joe's is named after its founder, Joe Coulombe. The chain began in 1958 as a Greater Los Angeles area chain of "Pronto Market" convenience stores. The original Pronto Markets were similar to 7-Eleven stores, so similar Coulombe felt the competition with 7-Eleven would be ruinous.[6]He is said to have developed the idea of the Trader Joe South Seas motif while on vacation in the Caribbean.[7] He had noticed that Americans were traveling more and returning home with tastes for food and wine they had trouble satisfying in supermarkets of the time.[8] The first store named "Trader Joe's" opened its doors in 1967. This store, on Arroyo Parkway in Pasadena, California, remains in operation. In response to competition from 7-Eleven, the chain differentiated its stores' offerings and doubled the floor space in 1967. In the first few decades of operation, some of the stores offered fresh meats provided by butchers who leased space in the stores. Trader Joe's at one time had sandwich shops, freshly cut cheese, and fresh squeezed orange juice. Theo Albrecht bought the company in 1979.[9] Coulombe was succeeded by John Shields in 1987; under his leadership the company expanded beyond California, moving into Arizona in 1993 and the Pacific Northwest two years later.[2] In 1996, the company opened its first stores on the East Coast, in Brookline and Cambridge, both outside Boston.[2] Shields retired in 2001, turning the reins over to Dan Bane. Shields still does consulting for the company.…

This strategy of customer relations heavily involves employees and much of Trader Joe’s success can be attributed to its internal communications. This approach is evident in everything the company does from the products that are on the shelves to the employees that work for the company. Trader Joe’s instills customer service values with employees by asking them to know the consumers. Janet Adamy of the Portland Oregonian said “employees know customers by name” and Chris Penttila of Entrepreneur magazine said employees “are a friendly and knowledgeable presence for customers navigating the aisles stocked with unique products” (Guth, and Marsh 183-187). Trader Joe’s has been ranked by Fortune magazine “among its 100 best places to work” (Lewis ix). At Trader Joe’s, “Compensation is generally much higher than the local supermarket competition” (Lewis ix). This sends a message to employees that they are valued. Also, Trader Joe’s is said to “value it employees as much as its customers. Their work is truly appreciated, their opinions matter, and they often determine which products make it to the shelves” (Lewis ix). In valuing their employees Trader Joe’s gains a…

Case 1: Who Says Shopping for Groceries Can’t Be Fun? In an industry famous for razor-thin profit margins, high levels of employee turnover, and intense competition usually based on price, Wegmans, a family-owned chain of 67 supermarkets in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, is quite unique. It has to be. Traditional grocers are under attack on many fronts. Mass merchandisers such as Wal-Mart with its superstore concept are taking customers, sales, and market share from traditional grocers. Mass merchandisers’ now control one-third of the grocery market, and experts predict that their market share will continue to rise, hitting about 40 percent in 2008. Customers say they are bored with the shopping experience at most traditional grocers. One recent study reports that 84 percent of shoppers say that traditional grocery stores are all alike. Over the past several years, several chains have struggled to survive, and some have declared bankruptcy or were bought out by competitors. How does this relatively small chain of grocery stores founded in 1930 by brothers John and Walter Wegman manage not only to survive, but also to claim a spot near the top of the industry? Although the answer to that question involves as many components as the number of brands on the cereal…

In this observational study, we sought to discover what leadership techniques and group skills were actually practiced by McDonald’s employees. Our field study entailed visiting four different McDonald’s stores in the greater Rochester area during distinct shifts ranging from early morning to late night. During each visit, a group member made a purchase and sat at a table where one could observe the behavior of managers and employees and customer interactions, without interfering with normal operations. Due to the fact we were restricted to a small sample of McDonald’s restaurants, we could not capture the complete spirit of the corporation. However, we were able to relate our findings to leadership and organizational behavior theories and some of McDonald’s corporate values. Through a series of observations and corporate research we discovered that McDonald’s employees demonstrate quality leadership and that the organization as a whole puts significant effort into motivating and working for its employees.…
