In July of 1988 Toyota Motor Manufacturing (TMM), USA began producing Toyota Camry sedans. Toyota implements the Toyota Production System (TPS) in their Georgetown plant, similar to all other production facilities. This system reduces cost by eliminating waste. Excess production consumes extra space and human resources to control the products. The two governing principles that Toyota modeled the TPS system after are Just-In-Time (JIT) production and Jidoka. JIT emphasizes the process of producing only what is needed when it is needed. Jidoka focuses on making any production problems instantly self-evident and production would cease when a problem arose. Toyota performs Jidoka by using andon cords to highlight with buzzers and lights the step with the non-compliance. Toyota uses these processes to outperform its competitors and deliver a high quality product.…

Toyota Motor Manufacturing, U.S.A. (TMM) is deviating from the standard assembly line principle of jidoka in an attempt to avoid expenses incurred from stopping the production line for seat quality defects. This deviation has contributed to the inability to identify the root cause of the problem, which has led to decreased run ratios on the line and an excess of defective automobiles in the overflow lot for multiple days. If this problem isn’t fixed quickly, an increased amount of waste will continue to be incurred and customer value will be threatened.…

Toyota has split its automotive business into four units comprising Lexus International, which covers our Lexus brand; Toyota No.1, which oversees operations in North America, Europe, and Japan; Toyota No.2, which is responsible for business in China, Asia & the Middle East, East Asia & Oceania, Africa, and Latin America & the Caribbean; and the Unit Center, which covers all unit-related operations. This more agile and autonomous management structure will enable us to clarify responsibility for operations and earnings, and will allow managers in the field to make decisions more quickly based on genchi genbutsu (on-site, hands-on experience). Recognizing that innovation is required in order to establish Lexus as a Japanese global luxury brand, the president has taken the reins of the newly formed Lexus International unit.…

TMS had, as they called themselves, a “tiered” system when it came to measuring, evaluating, and rewarding performances of the regional GM’s. Their system rewarded the general managers and allowed them to give rewards to the salesmen who made the best sales and on when the sales happened.
