Introduction
The tourism and hospitality industry is a broad industry with multiple, sectors and departments, often known as the industry operating hotels, accommodation, food and beverage and managing tourist activities. Many do not realize the vastness of this industry, therefore; there is usually confused about the jobs related to this industry. Jobs often share common features from jobs in other industries to meet the needs and requirements of guests to provide ultimate customer satisfaction (Lucas, 2004). Customer needs are usually customized (Hewagama, 2015), which results to the overlapping of departments and jobs from other industries. This trend uses the social media platform to advertise job opportunities and receive candidates suitable for a certain job. Websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are used regularly by millions of users around the world, therefore, the employment recruiter from the industry can post their vacancies on their social media pages. Interested candidates can, therefore, find job opportunities online and through a platform that is primarily used for entertainment and communication. Once the job advertisement catches the eyes of the seeker, they can send their e-resumes, again through the help of social media (Frost, 2016). Social media can also give insights to the candidates’ personalities, interests and backgrounds. Compared to other industries, this industry has a high turnover rate. A higher turnover negatively impacts the quality of the services provided. To avoid high turnover rates, organizations must retain their employees by engaging and motivating them. When employees are motivated to work, they will put in maximum efforts and utilize their maximum potential. Motivated employees are 21% more productive, making an organization 22% more profitable (The Ritz-Carlton Leadership Centre, 2015). Engagement and motivation generate interests in activities of an organization; effectively and efficiently achieving the vision and company’s goals (Patrick, Andries, Nalinh, 2016).
