Accommodation is one of the largest and fastest growing sectors in the tourism industry. This is the third largest group for employment and growth potential behind Food and Beverage Services and Recreation and Entertainment. Accommodation offers a wide variety of job opportunities, and if you enjoy making people feel "at home," this may be the perfect milieu for you. You can work at hotels, motels, inns, resorts, lodges, campgrounds, bed & breakfasts and time-share operations, to name just a few. ACCOMMODATION sectors

Accommodation is one of the largest and fastest growing sectors in the tourism industry. In 1997, approximately 173,000 workers were employed in hotels and other lodging operations in Canada. Between 1986 and 1996, accommodation services experienced a substantial growth of 39 per cent. Some reasons for this growth include: Extended demand beyond traditional seasons (e.g. conferences during summer at ski resorts) Growth of large hotel chains and increased interest in vacation and/or time-share concepts  Increased global interest in Canada as a destination

Those who are looking for employment opportunities in accommodation services can take advantage of this considerable growth. New jobs are continually being created, possibilities are growing for accelerated career advancement, and opportunities for positions in differing regions and types of establishments are also expanding. FOOD AND BEVERAGE SERVICES

Canada's food and beverage industry is a $32 billion a year industry currently employing over 700,000 people. This sector encompasses all types of establishments supplying food and beverages for consumption, from fine dining specialties, ethnic restaurants and institutional food outlets to catering firms, pubs and lounges. Food and Beverage is also a major youth employer and training ground for many employees who are beginning their working careers. A BRITISH COLUMBIA PERSPECTIVE:

Anticipated labor demand by 2015 is 44,300 new workers
Projected rate of annual employment growth is 2.6%
Changing consumer preferences and escalating competition are increasing the sophistication of management and business planning practices by food and beverage operators. Many restaurants are launching retail food product lines to diversify their interests and expand their market share. Other specialty establishments market their products to the corporate and business community. Food and beverage chains have found a niche in bookstores, department stores and casinos. As the lines between traditional food and beverage operations and other industries blur, employers and employees alike must continue reacting to changing customer expectations with innovative ideas and responses and by providing exceptional service that warrants repeat customer visits. Today, hospitality industry is among the sectors that have a greater opportunity to grow and expand due to the changing consumer needs. However, no matter the opportunity it has, there are also challenges accompanied to it in that it has to keep on changing its products and services as well. It is arguably so that meeting the changing consumer needs is not an easy task at all. It is a situation that challenges the entire functions of the hospitality industry, think of its human resources, finance department, marketing and advertising, legal function and even its board of directors.
