Touching Spirit Bear Character Analysis
Learning The Lessons Of Life

In the novel Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen the author discusses the idea of lessons. There are positive and negative lessons to be learned from the novel however the main focus is on the positive lessons. The most positive lessons are responsibility, trust and discovering yourself.

In the novel one of the positive lessons I focused on was responsibility. When Cole returns home from his first time on the island after being mauled, Cole’s mother starts to take responsibility for most of Cole’s anger problems. Cole was neglected and treated as though he was unloved by his parents for most of his life. All of Cole’s life he was beat and unloved, his mother was drunk all the time and his father was violent,

Cole starts to trust himself, trust his decisions and believe in himself. Since Cole has been sentenced to one year banishment on this island his self confidence went drastically down. He shut himself down and ignored everyone who cared about him and wanted to help him out of his stressful situation. Cole has started to gain trust in himself because of the island, Edwin and Garvey, and the Spirit Bear. Cole begins to trust his mother after she went to court and charged Coles father with abuse. Cole’s mother stopped drinking and started to regain her relationship with her son and starting showing Cole how much she actually loved him. All of Cole’s life he felt as if his parents did not love him and did not care about him. Cole’s father’s anger problems caused him to be violent and beat Cole, hard. Cole’s mother just tried to ignore what was going on by drinking. She was just as scared as Cole was if not more. Cole’s mother was mostly drunk out of her mind, she drank away her fear and depression until she realized how hurt Cole actually was. After Cole got mauled by the Spirit Bear his mother went to court and charged Cole’s father with abuse and as a result Cole let his mother back in and started to trust her again. Cole finally started to trust Edwin and Garvey because they were the only people really putting in an effort to help Cole. At the beginning they were the only ones that cared about Cole. The first time Cole was sent to the island he wanted absolutely nothing to do with Garvey or Edwin. All he wanted was to escape from the island. Cole thought that they did not actually want to help him. Cole thought they were just paid to. Once Cole got mauled by the Spirit Bear he had forty-eight hours to think about everything, most importantly Edwin and Garvey. Once Edwin came to Cole’s rescue he knew right then and there that Edwin and Garvey

This is the story of a young troubled teen who finds himself in major trouble after physically damaging another boy, Peter Driscal. Cole finds himself getting banished to an island by himself for a year. He does not apprehend the extremity of this situation because he always was in power, and was feared in any given environment. Cole only spent a slight amount of time on the island though, a few days. This may have failed the attempt of the elders and village peoples to change his perspective of life. Even though cole now understands emotions and wrong doings, he does not fully understand the whole purpose of this trip.…

The quote, “man becomes his worst enemy,” definitely applies to both of the stories. In Touching Spirit bear, Cole burns down his shelter. The way this makes him his own enemy is because, by burning it down, he lost all of his supplies. He los his bed, his food, his shelter in general, his clothes, and the book that Edwin gave to him which consisted of the foods poisonous and not. So, Cole is left with nothing but the clothes he’s wearing. In “The Monsters are due on Maple Street,” the people turn against one another to figure out who the “alien” was. So, they go from being each other’s closest friends, to worst enemy. They all have good intentions, which are, protect your family from any harm, but that doesn’t mean they need to beat each other…

It has been said that the biggest obstacle you’ll ever have to overcome is your mind and if you can overcome that you can overcome anything. This statement rings true in the novel The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore himself. The novel tells the stories of two individuals named Wes Moore who share somewhat similar backgrounds and adversity growing up, but who end up with two very different fates--one a life full of success and the other a life in prison. It is evident that the defining factors within their lives were the author Wes Moore’s mother’s strong presence and guidance, and it is his growth mindset that encourages him to improve; whereas, the other Wes Moore views his brother as his only role model, his father is…

Some of the lessons included is the traumatic effects of her injury. An example of this is Marina not talking. A quote that demonstrates this is ‘sent here [to Warrington] because [her] mother can't stand [her] silent presence at home' (P.5). This quote demonstrates that she doesn't speak at all, even with her own parents and that her mother can't stand her silent presence at home. Also, Marina's mother doesn't like having a daughter who doesn't talk. Another lesson this book…

Cole Matthews is an abused child who turned into a troubled kid because his parents abused him every day. He became an angry person who was willing to take anybody out in his way. When he got into trouble he would manipulate everyone into thinking he was sorry but he never really meant it. Cole hated everyone because anytime he didn’t get his way he would resort to the same violence and anger his father used on him. Cole thinks everything is a game, he thinks he should never be responsible for his own actions. Cole managed to get away with everything with no issues until he assaulted Peter. Cole thought he did no wrong because Peter told on him and anyone. Cole thought he could talk his way out of the assault charges like the other events when he got into trouble. The only reason Cole joined circle justice is because Garvey told him he could avoid going to jail. If Garvey hadn’t gotten Cole to join Circle Justice he wouldn’t have changed his bad ways. Being alone on the island, getting attacked by the spirit bear, and learning ways to relieve his anger through soaking in the pond and pushing the rock taught him to view the world in a new perspective. Cole realized that staying angry was the worst thing he could have done. He finally accepted his actions and saw the error in his ways. I saw the change in Cole’s character when he wanted to help Peter channel his anger. Cole never cared about anyone besides himself throughout his entire life. He was actually trying to help and wanted to be forgiven by Peter. Cole deceived everyone in his life and never cared about it. It was now in his best interest to become a better person, and rid himself of the evil he did in his life.…

Cole does not seem to have any control of the unforgettable emotions. “Edwin told me once that anger was a memory never forgotten. He’s right” (Page 130). The main cause of his anger is his own angry and alcoholic father and shy hopeless mother. Cole is beaten up by his angry father without any mercy, and his shy mother only watches him getting beaten. She does not even attempt to stop her husband from beating her own son. These irresponsible actions by Cole’s parents, made him feel that he was worthless and lived his life for no reason. “You don’t get it do you? My parents are divorced and don’t give a rat if I live or die. All they care about is themselves. Nobody cares about me. All my life I’ve been dumped on” (Page 27). As a result, the anger that was building inside of him eventually got out of control. This anger causes Cole to commit crimes. Cole robbed and trashed a hardware store. Peter, a boy at Cole’s school, found out that Cole did this act of violence. So, Peter told on Cole. Cole found out, in which he got very angry and mad. Instead of confronting Peter, Cole decided to smash Peter’s head against the sidewalk, very badly.Once Cole was sent to the island of Drake in Alaska, Cole felt depressed and angry at the same time. Cole eventually burnt down his cabin. Another example of his anger is dealing with the Spirit Bear. The Spirit Bear was calmly looking at Cole. Cole realized that this bear was not afraid of him. So, Cole let out his anger and tried to kill the bear. Instead of Cole hurting…

They can teach us about one of the so called ¨Seven Deadly Sins,¨ Greed. Both Stapleton and Jack Merridew felt greeds all-consuming power and they both completely succumbed to it. Stapleton's greedy desire for money drove him to kill others, steal, and probably to commit several other crimes that are not mentioned in the novel. Jack Merridew's greed was directed toward becoming leader and having sovereignty over all the other boys on the island. We should take heed from the mistakes of Stapleton and Jack Merridew and not follow down the path of destruction and chaos they chose. It is hard to battle greedy desires because greed is unlike any other desire. We all recognize there is constituted order of life that limits growth and every created thing on the earth has respected ¨normal¨ size, give or take a slight amount. When the ¨normal¨ size is achieved growth usually halts. Greed is the opposite. It keeps getting larger and larger and larger and large. Greed does not cease to grow, which poses a serious amount of danger. Stapleton's greed for money grew and grew and grew until it drove him to commit murder and Jack Merridew's greed for dominance grew and grew and grew until it drove him to kill and manipulate others. We all at some point in our lives will have a greedy desire and we must learn from Stapleton and Jack Merridew by controlling our greed and not letting it have power over us.…
