I think the Japanese proverb, “Fall seven times, stand up eight” explains that no matter how many times you fall, you will get up. In Touching Spirit Bear, the main character, Cole, struggles with how to live his life. He believes no one loves him, or appreciates him. Especially his parents, who could care less whether Cole was alive or dead. So, given the circumstances, Cole is a bad kid. He is 15, and has been in trouble with the law half his life. So, the proverb is saying, no matter how many tough times, relating to Cole, are in your life, push through, and stand up. Everyone gets to have a happy ending, you just have to know how to rise up to the challenge.…

Throughout her book, McCullers masterfully maintains the unrelenting motif of loneliness by providing intimate details of the lives of five different characters. However, despite being stuck in the stifling, soul crushing South, Mick Kelly rises above the recurring theme of disillusionment and burns bright with ambition and emotion. With her passion for music, her sensitivity towards others, and her growing relationship with her family, Mick Kelly gives readers confidence that she will have a hopeful future.…

Rejection and its resultant anger are two pillars around which East of Eden’s plot is built. The story is heavily influenced by these two principles, and they constitute the vast majority of thematic and pivotal plot points in the novel. The overarching theme is illustrated in its majority through Steinbeck’s repeated instances of rejection and anger. Steinbeck illustrates these emotions most clearly in the characters of Charles, Cathy, and Caleb. Their characters are wildly different, but their emotions and reactions are remarkably alike.…

1.)The Merced Hospital Staff believed Lia suffered from Epilepsy. They believed it translated into Qaug dab peg. What was misunderstood is that quag dab peg were not really perceived as the same thing in Hmong culture as Epilepsy is in western medicine. In the Hmong culture, QDP is believed to be caused by a bad spirit called a dab. It is believed that dabs are responsible for stealing souls and making its victims sick. Epilepsy is recognized by western medicine as a serious neurological condition. Although Epilepsy and Quag dab peg may have the same physical symptoms, the symptoms are interpreted differently by each culture, making the condition two different illnesses requiring two different treatments. In Hmong culture, QDP is perceived as an illness with honor. Seizures are thought of to be evidence that the one experiencing them has powers to perceive things that others cannot see. Someone suffering from the symptoms of QDP are also thought of to be able to facilitate their entry into trance, which is required for them to journey into the unseen realm.…

He is distant, ambitious, and cold, denouncing his family while remaining close to people who can help him achieve his goals. He is ruthless in his pursuit of success, and extremely smart. The tactics he uses in the world of society are effective, but seem to stem from the part of him that is the “self,” or the part of him that is more nature-oriented. He is the type of unattached, adventurous person that McCandless describes in his letter, and because of this he survives much longer on the island than an ordinary person would, just as McCandless uses his philosophy on life and nature to survive in the wild.…

In the novel, Jasper Jones, written by Australian Author, Craig Silvey, Jasper Jones is constructed to be a rebellious, mixed-race and ambiguous figure of danger and intrigue for Charlie. I found Jasper a fascinating character as he would present himself as being tough and walk around town as the “towns menace”, however deep down he is compassionate, altruistic, quiet and thoughtful as well as being independent and rebellious through conflict within community, within himself and within his father. Jasper’s complex personality makes him an interestingly humane character with a strong heart but just brought up in a troubled home.…
