Took A Sign Poem
In February 2004, I just got transferred to Aviano AB, Italy. After only being there for two weeks I got an email from my mom with some very unfortunate news. She told me that my father had stage four, cancer and only a few months left to live. This was a very difficult time since I did not have any time off to go home and I just started my qualification training. On top of that my father’s last wish was for none of his children to see him in this condition and wanted us to remember him as the strong man that he was. The poem “I Took It as a Sign”, relates to the struggle I had to face with because of my faith as a Roman Catholic being tested as I was going through this challenge in my life.
The first line someone sent a band to my house,

For me, it was the struggle I was going to have to face with the death of my father. Finally, after struggling with whether or not to comply with my father’s last wish I chose to go home against his wish. I arrived with just enough time to help comfort my mom and see my father. Three days after being home my father passed. This was the most difficult situation that my family had to face and we all had to support one another. My faith was tested not just because of the loss of my father, but also the Catholic Church we had my father’s funeral at refused to do last rights. If you don’t’ know anything about Roman Catholics you need all seven sacraments to go enter heaven. My father had all his sacraments, except last rights given to him. The next line, I took this as a sign, God wanted me to sing! (81), interpretation of this line is, we all have to accept the issue at hand so we get past the tragic event so we can heal and be happy. For me it was not so easy, I am ask god, will my father be allowed to go to heaven as approached his coffin at his viewing. I continued to ask the same question over and

In the bible it talks about God being your refuge and strength in trouble, and I think that God gave his mother and their family hope to keep going and hope for a brighter future.…

It’s in our sick and dying bed that we are sadly given no other task but to evaluate all our years of living. The body no longer full of vigor nor fight, the heart heavy form sorrows past; the footsteps of death nocking at the door serve as an earnest call to evaluate and make peace with all we did in life. Suddenly, its time to review the many chronicles that compose our life story. As I look back on my life I am overwhelmed with grief. I grieve not for missed opportunities, God knows I seized every opportune moment. I grieve for the misjudgment of my ambitious endeavors, which will be forever erroneously highlighted and remain an eternal blemish upon my legacy.…

    Boston Bombings

I chose to address this prompt in an imaginative form as I was inspired by the story of the child and man that lost their lives in the Boston Bombings. This event had a strong impact on me and my awareness that bad things do happen to good people. My imaginative piece was written as a poem by the man who died in the bombings. I wrote this poem in the first person and in current tense to convey a sense of pain and suffering in this dying process he experienced and had to go through. This poem is aimed at the horrible people who did this and they should know what they did and how it affected people. It also could help society realise how bad this event was and how because of the actions of cruel people occurrences like these do happen. Now because of these heartless souls someone else’s life will never be the same. Because of these actions someone is now missing a son, a brother, a grandson, a husband and a friend that they can never get back or see again. My purpose of this piece was to move the audience and to educate the people about the experiences of this treacherous event. I decided to discuss the process and the emotions of what the man was going through after the bomb had hit. I said ‘events flashing before my eyes’ to make that connection to the myth that when you die you see your whole…

I never thought me, of all people, would experience such a sorrowful day. I have tried to forget it time and time again; but the reality is I will always remember every miniscule detail, moment, word, and facial expression on that particular day. My heart managed to shatter into a million pieces, leaving me without a reason to pursue my existence. My salty tears freely rolled down my warm cheeks, causing my eyes to burn sensationally. I remember mourning on the comforting shoulders of my family members, as they too were consumed by their feelings. The most valuable lesson that beared a reservation in my spirit was to cherish every moment and loved one, for tomorrow is not guaranteed to anyone. I wish I could have fathom this reality before the climactic tragedy struck me like a ton of bricks. Although death is normal, it seemed almost foreign when it abducted the life of my favorite uncle.…

When we are going through hardships in life, we feel like we are in a small wreck boat fighting the currents of a nasty sea storm. We start noticing we are miles and miles away from help; we realize we are alone. We cannot see beyond the situation we are currently experiencing. We are blind by the sea storm and it seems like there is no sign of hope anywhere. But just as we fall into despair, a luminous light squeezes from the dark grayish clouds. And even though we almost had let go of the only precious thing that gave us strength, this light is giving us an opportunity to preserve hope once more. In Lisel Mueller’s poem “Hope”, Mueller claims hope is difficult to see and maintain, but it lives everywhere even in herself.…

To me this reminds me that Jesus is my savior and I have the gift of sacrament and eternal life. This gives me peace and hope. In a world of bad news and stressful events he tells us to not be afraid, that he will take care of us ultimately. He tells us he does not give like the world; we cannot “earn his gifts”. He does not discriminate in classes or those who are more fortunate or wealthy get the wealth. He gives his gifts to all who believe. He is a caring God who wants the best of all people. We need peace. Some religions still promote hate or separation…

First of all, I noticed the use of personification in the second stanza. Personification is when human characteristics are given to an inanimate object. The poet describes how the aeroplanes “circle moaning overhead Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead” (Auden 539). While aeroplanes do not have the ability to scribble or to moan, saying that they do adds complexity to the poem. It is almost like saying that the aeroplane is suffering grief of the death as well as the speaker. This shows how the emotions of sorrow and grief dominate over any other feelings the poet could have.…

    My Personal Faith

My faith has enabled me to handle life challenges from my past and present. Some of these challenges have been series of events that I could hardly believe were happening, while others came with great joy. At five years old, my younger brother, Chandler, died unexpectedly. This was a tough challenge for my whole family to face. This challenge could have easily torn my family apart but together, as a team with God, we worked hard at picking up the pieces and moving forward even when there were days that seemed to be impossible. In the fifth grade, I was diagnosed with a common learning disability known as Attention Deficit Disorder. I am faced with this challenge on a daily basis. I have learned to cope with this disorder over the years by making prayer and patience priorities in helping me conquer this challenge. This challenge was especially difficult during my SAT and ACT tests. Certain scores on these tests were required to get into college and play NCAA football. The stress and pressure of taking these tests felt unbearable at times. While studying and before and during each test, I would remind myself that, through God, all things are possible. With God by my side, I was able to achieve the scores needed to reach my college and athletic goals.…

The poem “My Father Began as a God” by Ian Mudie is about a boy who changes his views on his father as he grows older. As a child, he saw his father as a fearless hero that is able to do anything. However, by the time he was an adolescent, his father had become a “foolish old man”. He was no longer a fearless hero, but a father “with silly and outmoded views of life and modality”. The cause for this change of perspective was puberty. As he grew even older, his perspective changes once again. At the last stage of change in perspective, his father dies.…

The poem is a 26-lined free verse and uses multiple literary devices to enhance rhythmic quality and emphasise certain points. The writer uses a lot of imagery, which is seen in the children’s reaction to their father’s suffering, specifically when his office, secretaries, lunches, and suits are taken away. The children “grinned” and “were tickled” at the thought of all of these horrific events. The writer uses repetition to emphasise the…

One of the most severe experiences in life is being a teenager. Your hormones run chaotically. There are genuine and mediocre days. Putting yourself first and others second is the typical mentality that we, as teenagers, posses. After shortly living the high life of adolescence, I wasn't thinking about myself anymore, my attention went to my mother. Since my mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer, I've learned the value of a strong support system. With this new knowledge and privilege, I have made a personal obligation to truly be a dedicated friend to everyone in my life. Obviously, I’ve have gone through a lot of emotional struggles for the past two years. Not too many people can say they have been in my position. God has truly blessed me with such support and love. Even though my mom has this disease, it has brought us closer together. Two years ago, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer on October 16, 2011 at the age of 51. I was sitting on my bed waiting for my mom to come home from work. Instead, I get a phone call from her crying. Immediately I asked "Mom what's wrong." She replied, "Chablis, I have cancer." At that moment the phone drops out my hand, and tears begin to flood my face. Hearing the news, it felt as if something ripped my heart out and slowly began to tear it to pieces. How could a treacherous disease be within the body of a beautiful woman? Alone, scared and confused I turned to my support system. Alex was there to comfort me when things seemed impossible. He'd try and take my mind off everything and be a teenager again. Telling me that my mom will push through put my mind at ease. Now ready and eager to fight this battle with my mom, the three of us become the foundation for each other. Eight chemotherapy, and twelve radiation treatments is what she had to endure. As our bond grew stronger, it seems as if her health became more and more delicate. When I thought my life couldn't get any more complicated, I get a…
