I began to concentrate on formulating a diagnostic hypothesis from the beginning of his marriage to analyze the etiology of the complaints he provided. Etiology is the study of why something has occurred, or how it came about (Raskin, 2012). Tony was born and raised in Texas, joined the military, and traveled to Tokyo, Japan for two weeks of leave where he met Kioko through a Japanese bride service. One piece of information that caught my attention was the fact that Tony and Kioko were from two different cultures who grew up in two different countries.
A couple should love one another, get to know each other personally, understand each other’s culture system, the value of marriage, and commitment that takes place in a marriage. Tony and Kioko were married after two weeks of having an eventful time with each other during his vacation. It is in my professional opinion that Tony and Kioko entered into a relationship without understanding the full consequences of marriage to people they did not know, and each had a personal motive for the marriage. During this session, the motive for their marriage seemed to be avoided during this session, but is an important factor to discuss in the next counseling session. Tony told me that his marriage has not been doing well for several years with Kioko. He appeared that he wanted to repair his marriage on numerous occasions the past few months, but every time he spoke to his wife about resolving their problems, she would spurt into an outburst making him feel guilty. Tony mentioned that his wife thought he took her away from her family to dump her, indicating that she felt he did not love her anymore. The ill-mannered outbursts included him taking her away from her family in Japan, talking over him to the point he stopped
