Tom Sawyer is incredibly manipulative, in fact, when aunt Polly finds Tom eating jam, Tom shouts, “My, Look behind you, Aunt”(Twain 2) Tom tricks his aunt, is able to get away and avoids being punished. Furthermore, when Tom meets a new boy that he doesn’t like and is threatening to punch him, Tom exclaims “for two cents I will do it.”(Twain 7) Tom manipulates him enough that he
gets money from the boy.
Through his interactions with others, Tom Sawyer has proven many times, in all different kinds of situations, to be an incredibly intelligent person. He can easily and without being noticed manipulate others, like when he gets two cents from a new boy who he threatened to punch. Using his cleverness will let him discover things that nobody else can, like when he finds a treasure later in the story.
