Disciplining Our Children to Spank or Not to Spank

“Spare the rod, spoil the child.” “Have a heart that never hardens a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts” The above two basic quotes both describing the act of discipline when concerning children. As the US has formed throughout the decades the attitude on how to raise one’s children has shifted. We were once a nation, who believed that to see a child being sent to pick a switch off a tree for a whipping as a norm in the development of good character. We have since moved to be a nation, in which people are concerned about raised voices when dealing with children. As a mother of two, an aunt of five and a daycare provider I am constantly around today’s youth. I have taken numerous child care and psychology classes and heard both sides of the argument to spank or not to spank. Due to all these things I personally stand beside the decision to use corporal punishment for many different reasons. Hopefully by the end of this paper you may not agree with me in my decision but you will at least think twice about it before you decide 100 percent that you are totally against the concept. Spanking is defined by Webster’s dictionary as the beating on buttocks: a beating with the flat of the hand on some body 's buttocks, given as punishment. One of the biggest misconceptions I feel about spanking is the definition. When you hear spanking for some reason the first image that comes to mind is instantly abuse. It is often easy to be disgusted by the thought of spanking when it is accompanied with the pictures of small frightened bruised children. A lot of people fail to realize that like most things in life there are parameters when it comes to spankings. These rules have been set so as to keep things from crossing the line of discipline to abuse. The fact that laws have been made to regulate as opposed to abolish the practice of corporal punishment should say a lot.
