To Make the World a Better Place

To Make the World a Better Place In order to make the world a better place to live in, instead of thinking big like most of us feel the need to (living in poverty ridden lands to feed the hungry, building homeless shelters, ect.), in college, I feel that I am going to start small in a sense though not excluding the possibility of doing something extensive in later years. The way I want to make at least where I live a better place is through helping people in need, by being a light in a dark world. Though I have not been to college yet, from what I have heard it seems pretty corrupt and perverse, from getting the amount of freedom we do all at once. If I can, I want to be there for anybody who will listen, to help save themselves in the long run, or at least in their college life, to make better choices. Although this idea might seem completely lame to some, it is what I have been brought up to believe, to try to show Jesus to all I meet to the best of my ability. In doing so, it is my hope that others will join me and it might become a sort of “pass it forward” kind of theme. This at least is my hope for my college life, to maybe volunteer at soup kitchens, and other volunteer opportunities when time allows. Though these small acts might not “change the world”, they will at least get me in a state of wanting to make the world a better place, so when I get out of college actually have the time and resources to do something substantial, it will be in my second nature, and it will be easier to find great things in which to help my community, and the world a better place. One extensive thing that I feel like I might want to do when I get older is to help build water wells in foreign countries to help out the people who have no clean water. One well give water to a whole town for years to come, which is a pretty decent

Something very important to me in my life is service and that is why throughout my life I also plan to remain involved in the act of helping others in need. Throughout high school I have belonged to a youth group that’s has gone a mission trip every summer, and on these trips I have had some of the most meaningful experiences of my life which have really made me realize how good my life is, and how important it is to share your talents, abilities, and time with others who may not be as fortunate as yourself.…

Throughout high school I was able to develop many skills pertaining to the social aspects of college, which have really helped me. Growing up, I’ve been fortunate enough to live in a two parent, middle class home. I have never experienced death of a family member or someone close to me. I have been so lucky to have such a wonderful life. Once I started going to leadership camps, meeting kids who have had such difficulties in their lives I realized not everyone’s lives are as happy-go-lucky as mine. This has taught me to treat every individual I meet in college with compassion and kindness, as you never know what kind of life they’ve had. No one should be judged by his or her social class, friend group, how they dress, or come off in public settings. Each person has experienced some hardship in their life and thus everyone deserves their chance to show a person who they truly are. Using this mindset I have been able to make many friends in organizations such as the President’s Leadership Class in which I wouldn’t have typically met them. This predetermined view of the world has helped me graciously in college.…

~Mahatma Gandhi. Service is to help others in need or not in need. I am excited to try to do even more service in the future. I have many ideas for the school when it comes to service. One idea is to help children in hospitals by just making them something like a card or decoration. My dad is working with a company that is rebuilding St. Peter’s Hospital and I know that some of the kids in the children’s section of the hospital would love something to cheer them up. Right now for service I give my old clothes and toys to my younger cousin and if she doesn’t want them, we take them to the Salvation Army. Also like I had mentioned in the first paragraph we donate over three or four hundred dollars a year to the WGY Christmas wish organization. That money goes to poor families so the parents can buy presents or food for their children. I know I need to work on this skill in particular but I have many good…

I believe that community service and volunteer work are very important. The best thing a person can donate is their time. I feel it’s every individual’s responsibility and beyond. I also feel it would help me develop better leadership skills by planning and organizing food drives and park cleaning etc. All in all I know that I can and I will make a difference in people’s lives every day.…

Before, I was all about myself, I knew what I needed and knew what to do to get what I needed. But since I have had this experience I have decided that giving is the life for me. I now see that I am not the only person in the world that has needs, and I am also not the only person in the world who struggles to meet said needs. And I believe that if I lead the rest of my life giving, I could inspire someone else to give, too. Luther was all it took to start the peasant revolt. That alone is enough proof that if one mind changes, several will follow after it. If we all become giving citizens maybe we can all find our inner…

Humans are not just specks in the universe. Our lives have purpose, and we have to make a decision every day to pursue that purpose. All too often people diminish the impact a single person can make by rationalizing that our lives represent less than a blink of an eye in the greater scheme of eternity. However, our actions, words, and accomplishments do not die with us. We leave a legacy that impacts others. And this inspired me to create a senior project that would last even after I graduated. I not only wanted to create a project that left a positive impression on my community, but also changed my heart to focus on others. Ultimately, I decided to create the 365 Venture, where I committed to volunteering 365 hours in the year 2016 and document…

Community service is vital to the life and survival of all communities. It is the role of all citizens to stand up and to be active members of their communities whether it be through activities, such as volunteering at retirement homes, schools, or local churches. Through my continued efforts to serve my community in college, I hope that I am able to benefit my community. Whether it be those who utilize the public library or little kids in grade school that need assistance with their homework, I will surely be able to serve…

West believes that college should make us think about the greater good of the community rather than the greater good for ourselves. I completely agree with West on this point, although college for some pushes them more towards the materialistic. A large number of students attend college for completely superficial reason, to get a good job, to advance in their company, etc. We as humans are all innately altruistic; it’s through social influences that we become egotistical. West believes that a true college education should move us back towards our natural altruistic ways. If the community fails, so do…

I am currently a senior Political Science major, History minor, with a concentration in International Relations. I am also the chairman of the Howard University NAACP Political Action Committee. I am an academic, I am a student leader, but more importantly, I am a servant. It is my firm belief that the reason I was blessed to be given the opportunity to get a college education is so that I can use this privilege and knowledge to help others. Just recently in December I was fortunate enough to go on a service trip to South Africa with the YAALI program. There we did community service and connected with our brothers and sisters on the continent. This was a very impressionable experience for me, especially because it was my first time leaving…

I have been a hardworking student here at Elsik High School. I’ve spent my first three years doing my best to excel within the ranks of my class and to get a good GPA. Now that I’ve achieved that and know that my academic achievements are fulfilled, I have decided to get involved with the school and help around the community. Whenever I go to places, I always tell myself that I should help around the community to help the poor and needy and help the environment. I have always wanted the world to change for the better, and little by little, I know we can. I’m participating in a beach clean-up volunteer service with a friend next Saturday to help the environment. Ever since I have signed up for that, I have felt good about myself and I knew that I have much more potential to do good around the neighborhood.…

I have been so blessed with a healthy and financially stable family and because of that I feel as though I need to give back. I have seen first hand the effects that living in a negative environment have on a child. My own cousin has been the victim of her mother’s poor decisions. Watching this first hand has been very difficult for me and sadly I’m seeing her actions resembling her mothers as she grows up. I know there are kids my age who feel they have no other choice but to do exactly what their parents have done. It always hurts my heart to see kids struggle because of the poor choices their parents have made. Of course, not all parents living in low-income situations have made poor decisions in their life, but the children who are suffering because their parent’s actions, I feel; need to know they can make a better life for themselves. Many of these high school students probably haven’t seen anything outside of Pontiac. I want them to know there is more out there for him. I want to see these kids…

I hope to pass out one blanket and one sandwich to the homeless who are not allowed in a shelter. I will be going downtown every Saturday for the next 4 weeks to pass out blankets and sandwiches. Doing this project will change the world by helping people who are starving and freezing to death. I am doing this project for two reasons. The first reason is because I was assigned this project for 8th grade English class. The second reason is because I think everyone deserves to be warm, provided with food, and have their physical needs met. I am glad that we have this project because it makes me think harder about how I can make an impact on the world.…
