It might be important because the story reflects pat of her life. The father is a lawyer, the setting is Alabama, and even the characters are like the friends and relatives of Harper Lee herself. Even the era the book takes place in was the era that Harper grew up in.

She moves to New York to be a writer, after ending her pursuits to be a lawyer, and studying law. To Kill a Mockingbird was published in July of 1960, and the film came out two years later in 1962.

I am guessing that some of the conflicts in the book could come out of the lawyer background that her father had, and maybe some of the events that came out of her childhood with Capote, and some of the memories they shared.
