To Kill a Mockingbird During the Great Depression when all hope, faith, and encouragement is lost. Scout, her brother Jem, and their father Atticus Finch are all talked about in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The novel takes place in a small town called Maycomb, Alabama. Scout talks all about her and brother’s childhood experience, their father Atticus, becomes the image of hope and that good people still exist despite the prejudice that takes place every day. Atticus’s strong character is evident throughout the novel.
Atticus Finch is a well-respected citizen of the town; however, the citizens give him and his family a hard time with his latest court case, yet he is always reelected by the people of Maycomb, for State Legislator. In the novel, he teaches the kids that good and bad coexist in everyone, and that you must learn to look at the good in every situation. For example, Mrs. Dubose trashed Atticus’s name to his children because of who he defends in a court case. Meaningless and empty is what he says about the offensive words. He tells the kids that she is forgiving for what she said and that Mrs. Dubose has real courage because she fought her morphine addiction before she died. Atticus told Scout “… really never understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.” Atticus wanted to teach the kids that everyone has a view, so you have to be understanding to decisions that people make.
A father, a brother, and a widower, Atticus Finch is faced with many roles to juggle. He never struggles with any role. Scout and Jem, Atticus’s children throughout the novel run to him for knowledge and advice. Scout tends to go to Atticus for explanations on things she is uncertain of. For example, Scout tells Miss Maudie the neighbor that Atticus told her God wants you to love people like you love yourself. Atticus does his best to teach the children life lessons.
