An accusation based off of circumstantial evidence, a charismatic witness, and a life-changing conviction were only a few of the elements that caused major tension in the courtroom on July 19th. If you’re one of the few that didn’t come out to hear the gossip material of the year, we have all the juicy and intriguing details. The testimony of Mr. Heck Tate, the county sheriff of Maycomb, was the opening statement of the trial. Considering Tate being under oath, one would presume that he’d speak of only the truth and nothing but the truth. However, when reviewing his statements along with Bob Ewell and his daughter, Mayella, some aspects tend to contradict one another. After being questioned by Mr. Gilmer, the prosecutor in this case, Atticus Finch, a defense attorney for Tom Robinson, begins his cross-examination. It is revealed then that even though from Tate’s own judgement Mayella was brutally beaten, no medical attention was called upon to at least check up on her well-being after she experienced a very traumatic experience. “She was mighty banged up. Something sho’ happened, it was obvious.” said Tate in response to Finch asking why no doctor was called upon. Next to the witness stand was the notorious, Bob Ewell, father of Mayella and God knows how many more children. He handled all the questions in a nonchalant sarcastic tone with bits of unnecessary profanity. During his testimony, Judge Taylor stated there has been a request to “clear the court”. Taylor, afraid of Mr. Ewell’s foul language damaging the innocent ears of women and young children, said this as a precautionary warning to Ewell. Judge Taylor also stated that he’ll let everyone stay unless they begin to misbehave, which in that case, he would have them up for contempt of court.
