The person who is being accused (Tom Robinson), the accuser/witness/victim Mayella Ewell, the victim's father and other witness Bob Ewell, are all important people in this trial but so is Atticus Finch the defense of Tom Robinson.…
Tom Robinson was a civilized man who was trying to get home from work one day,and Mayella Ewell ruined that for him. In the unfair case of Tom Robinson he was accused of raping a girl he never found interest in.The case had a ruling set before it even started, because he was a black man. There was so much evidence that Mayella wasn't raped by Tom Robinson, some of the evidence were Tom's physical handicap from a cotton gin as well as his left arm being twelve inches shorter than his right and was not able to use his left arm.His color works againt him,the jury decides to believe mayella instead of Tom. Therefore, he was convicted and sent to jail.…
On Monday, Finch, a dignified lawyer of Maycomb, Alabama, caught Ewell red-handed for his left hand. Through a thorough and witty cross examination, listeners of the court case can conclude that the plaintiff, Ewell, was responsible for beating his daughter; Mayella, who was seemingly pressured to accuse the Negro of raping her. Finch affiliates the evidence of Mayella’s bruises on the right side of her face to the fact of Robinson’s missing left arm, and ultimately corners Ewell into what seems to be a catch-22.…
Tom Robinson was accused for raping a young women named Mayella Ewell on May 18. Mayella Ewell is the oldest of 8 sibling in her family, she is motherless and takes care of the smaller children while she works around her father’s house. The whole court house was filled with white families sitting on the bottom rows of cowhide-bottomed chairs while the blacks had to stay in the balcony. The trial started with Mr. Heck Tate in the witness stand, on the left of him was Judge Taylor. Mr. Tate described Mayella's injuries to the solicitor, Mr. Gilmer “Well I was called by Mr. Bob Ewell yonder, it was the night of November twenty-first. I was just leaving my office to go home when Mr. Ewell came in, very excited he was, and said get out to his…
“‘Well, Dill, after all he’s just a Negro.’ ‘I don’t care one speck. It ain’t right somehow it ain’t right to do ‘em that way. Hasn’t anybody got any business talkin’ like that-it just makes me sick,’”(Lee, 266). In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird author Harper Lee lays out the story of the Finch family consisting of two siblings, Jem and Scout, along with their widowed father Atticus. This family is faced with a tough break when Atticus get appointed a case to defend an African American (Tom Robinson) in the time of extreme discrimination. Growing up shapes and builds minds to what will fully become of them in future years even though there may be obstacles to endeavor through the process.…
I walked into the court room, and looked at the jury, they were all white, I knew that it would have to be a miracle to get the jury to come back with the verdict that Tom Robinson was innocent. But I had a plan. If the trial goes well, I will appeal against the verdict, and then the court case will go to another place, where the jury won't be so biased against black people.…
Chapter 1 In this chapter the Finch family is introduced by Scout. Simon Finch established a homestead, ‘Finch’s Landing’, on the banks of the Alabama River. Both of his sons ended up leaving the landing as, Atticus, studied law; the other had studied medicine. Their sister Alexandra stayed and took care of the landing with her husband.…
Tom Robinson is dead. Not a surprise for me, although people do seem startled by this news. I honestly don’t understand how it is possible. Each black person who passes through the courthouse doors doesn’t go back to the family. Usually negroes are, at the least, sentenced to a couple of years in prison, despite the crime ‘committed’. Now and then the punishment can even be worse, if the jury feels particularly discriminatory. At the end everybody who enters that hellish room leaves their children, parents or wives on their own in this cruel cruel world. The events continuously repeat over and over again, and there are always some innocent, optimistic imbeciles who keep hoping for a different verdict to escape the jury’s lips. Fools who keep…
I tend to my garden as I watch several cars drive along my street back to their homes. Tom Robinson’s trial must be over. Before the trial even started, I predicted that the verdict would be guilty. When I saw Jem, Scout, and Dill arrive back at their house with long faces, my prediction was confirmed. It is still upsetting for me to hear that another innocent black man’s life was ruined because of the way white people treat them. I did not attend the trial; I do not wish to see an innocent person on trial for their life. I take off my gardening gloves and head inside. As I wash my hands, I see the children looking very upset and confused. I decide to make them chocolate cakes to help to cheer them up. They must be extremely confused and disappointed about the verdict of the trial. They are too young to completely understand our unfair society.…
Two promiscuous females named Ruby Bates and Victoria Price, dressed in overalls hoboed across the state of Alabama when they had accused nine boys of rape in order to avoid the minor accusations, which they would have been charged with if the posse at Paint Rock had caught them. The newspaper has done no different as the allegations in the afternoon of the arrest had already turned to incontestable facts. A local newspaper, Jackson County Sentinel, had the front bold headlines stating “Nine Negro Men Rape 2 White Girls; Threw White Boy from Fright Train and Help White Girls and One Prisoner Until Captured by Posse (Apel, 2004)”. Two white women scared of being charged with vagrancy, and taking a minor across the state caused…
To Kill a Mockingbird is a book that focuses on discrimination. The County of Maycomb believes that white people are superior in everyway. Lee uses the trial to emphasize the severity of the Maycomb viewpoint. She uses it to show the readers instead of just telling them. It is also a way to discreetly show the readers how severe the Maycomb fever is without needing to have Scout, the narrator, comprehend the problem. By carefully choosing what happens and who is involved in the trial Lees proves her point explicitly.…
Imagine you are in a town where racism is evident and you have been falsely accused of rape against a white woman, Mayella Ewell. You are an African American young man who has a beautiful wife and children, fighting for your freedom in a trial that could end with you being six feet underground. The evidence of the trial is to your advantage and your defending attorney is now presenting his closing argument that is sure to prove your innocence. The major conflict in the trial is the inequality you face because you are a colored man against a white woman. Racism was one of the many problems affecting the United States, especially in southern states, during the 1930’s. It is still a major issue in the United States today. In “To Kill A Mockingbird”…
In the book“To Kill A Mockingbird” a man called Tom Robinson was accused of rapping Mayella(page 185).Tom Robinson say that he always pass by the Ewell's house whenever he goes to work and one day Bob Ewell went to Heck Tate office to accused Tom Robinson. Everyone knows Tom Robinson is innocent but at that time they will always accused a colored men. The word of a white man is much power than a colored man. It’s not fair because Tom Robinson is innocent and with all the proof Atticus show at court say he’s innocent but the judge convicted him of rapping Mayella.Innocent man going to jail for something he didn't do ,there's lots of men who are criminals and there out in the…
Many members within the Maycomb community were heavily affected by this dramatic trial. Various emotional changes occurred among these characters before, during, and after the final verdict. Tom Robinson, Atticus Finch, and Robert Ewell were all affected severely by the trial and by the communities’ reactions. Though some may not believe, it is shown multiple times in the novel that these characters were affected by the trial.…
