To Kill A Mockingbird Scout Character Traits
Scout is a very unique character in more ways than one. She shows many traits

throughout the whole book of “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Some specific traits that she shows

include being clever, acting loyal, and even being defiant at sometimes.

Scout is a very loyal person. She shows that through many of her words and actions

throughout the book. One example being when she had defended Atticus against many of the

people who had disagreed with him taking up the case against Tom Robinson. She had punched

her cousin when he called Atticus a name, and she even fought Cecil Jacobs at school when he

made fun of Atticus using mean words that even she didn't understand. A great quote displaying

how loyal Scout can be, is located on page 145, when she was talking about Dill she

She has been reading for as long

as she remembers. Jem helps support this idea when they first meet Dill and he had said that

Scout had been reading since she was born. Another way to show she is smart is at the end of the

book when she quotes Atticus, saying, “One time he said you never really know a man until you

stand in his shoes and walk around in them.” She applies this quote to Boo Radley, as she stands

on his porch. That was a second aspect of Scout’s character, the third and final one being how

she presented herself as being defiant at certain times.

Scout has the ability to be very daring every so often. When she had visited aunt

Alexandria during christmas, she had cussed at the table, she said, “I asked him to pass the damn

ham, please.” This shows she can be rebellious because she was very young when she had said

this. It also doubled up because back when this was based, young girls like her were expected to

act lady-like, but she did not. At a later time, after the christmas dinner, Atticus had told her to go

to bed. But she didn’t. She stayed up and listened to the conversation between uncle Jack and

Courage is characterized as mental or moral strength to surpass notions of fear. As demonstrated by Atticus Finch and Mrs Dubose in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the development of courage gives the character’s strength and courage to hold their heads high, while fearing none. Harper Lee depicts the theme of courage incalculable amount of times, detailing courage as “ when you know you’re licked before you being, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” (Chapter 11, Page 124) All of the characters have an alternate kind of perspective of what courage is exactly, which will be examined in depth.…

A characteristic that Scout has is that she is curious. This curiosity stems from her being young, talked down to and not knowing much about the people around her. Scout is interested in knowing more about her mother, so she can feel closer to her. She asks about how her mother looked, how she acted and if she loved her mother. Noticeably, she is curious about her mother and she is looking for a connection between her and herself. Along with being curious scout can also be described as a tough person.…

When she met Boo, that was when she fully understood Atticus’s words. When Boo asked her to take him home, she displayed true understanding and said “I would lead him through our house, but I would never lead home” (236) meaning she would never let the neighbors talk about him. She then walked him to his house and looks at everything from his point of view, following Atticus’s advice. Her words were “It was still summertime, and the children came closer…It was fall, and his children fought on the sidewalk in front of Mrs. Dubose…Winter, and his children shivered at the front gate, silhouetted against a blazing house…Summer, and he watched his children’s heart break. Autumn again, and Boo’s children needed him” (237). She finally understood…

Aunt Alexandra tells Jem and Scout they have to act like Finches. Initially, Atticus agrees with her, but says differently while he puts his children to bed, that “I don’t want you to remember it. Forget it.” (178). Atticus doesn’t want himself or his kids to act like the rest of their family. He likes everyone to think for themselves and be their own person. Again, Atticus is genuine when Heck is telling Atticus that Jem did not kill Bob Ewell, but in his shock, Atticus doesn’t believe him and thinks Tate is trying to cover up what Jem did. Atticus tells Mr. Tate that, “I don’t live that way.” (365). Atticus is an honest person, and he always tries to be honest and outright. He doesn’t act different around certain people or in certain social settings. As the Finches’ neighbor Miss Maudie Atkinson says, “Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets.” (61).…

One of these people was Mrs. Dubose, who was one of the eldest and most sick of the town. She was extremely prejudiced against black people and deeply despised Atticus for defending a black man in court. However, Atticus was polite and respectful to her no matter how many slurs she threw at him, and Scout took notice. She said, “It was times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars, was the bravest man who ever lived” (134). Scout thought Atticus was brave for taking on this bully, not by revolting, but by means of respect. He faced Mrs. Dubose with pride and brushed off any taunt she had for him. Scout held this characteristic in high esteem and knew he was a courageous man.…

As seen in the story, Scout was portrayed as a determined, brave, and curious tomboy. She had a hot temper when things didn’t go her way and would deal with her temper with her fists. Primary reason of her dealing with situations that way because of her determination to prevent herself from showing any girly traits, hence why she’d always beat those who antagonize her. She was always with her older brother, Jem playing outside along with her friend Dill, so she was an adventurous person. Scout also loved to read with her father every night which gives a sense that Scout is super bright and smart. Lee had a "gifted English teacher who introduced her to challening literature and the rigors of writing well" and hence why "Lee loved nineteeth-century British authors best" (The Big Read | To Kill a Mockingbird 1). Scout was definitely a troublemaker, constantly getting in trouble with her housekeeper, neighbors, even her teachers! Lee wasn’t any different. She was just as rebellious about displaying herself as feminine and was just as Tomboy as Scout. she was an "unruly tomboy" (The Big Read | To Kill a Mockingbird 1). She used to be a big trouble maker, carrying the same characteristics as she illustrates Scout as, beating up children to show her strength and doing what she felt was right, and basically being more wise and mature than other children.…
