Scout learns to know people before judging them. When Jem, Scout's older brother, hit the tops of all of Mrs. Dubose's camellias his punishment was to read to Mrs. Dubose, this is Scout's description of her. “She was horrible. Her face was the color of a dirty pillowcase... Old-age liver spots dotted her cheeks... pale eyes with black pinpoint pupils...”(Lee 142). In the beginning Scout though that Mrs. Dubose was a “mean, ugly creature.” It tuned out that Mrs. Dubose was dealing with a morphine addiction and had no control of her looks. Near the end of the book when Bob Ewell tries to kill Jem and Scout, Mr Tate says, “... [Bob was] brave enough to kill children”(249). Before Scout thought all people were nice, some nicer than others, but people would never attack children. She never would have imagined people could kill children, drunk or not. This was the main time Scout met the mass inhumanity of people. Scout realizes some people don't believe in discrimination. During the middle of the court case when Dill breakdown something Scout says causes Dill to give Scout some reason. “Well Dill after all he is just a negro.”(PgNumber). Before Scout thought that the discrimination was part of life. When Dill went back on her statement she realizes some people were very opposed to discrimination. The lead her to have more respect for them.
Scout grows up in many ways though the book. She learns to know people before judging them. To see some people are extremely rasist. That some people are very inhumane, and finally that some people do not believe in
