Summary
In chapter 13 aunt Alexandra explains to Atticus that she should stay with them for a while so that the finches have a feminine influence in the house for a while. She associates with the neighbors and begins to learn about the town. She notices that each family is different and each has their own unique characteristics. She tells Atticus that he should teach the children to be proud of being a finch and to learn more about their family lifestyle, but in the end, scout just ends up crying. In chapter fourteen the court cases that Atticus is involved in begin to draw attention to scout and Jem. Scout asks Atticus what rape is and the

    The book’s first chapter is about Dryden meeting Rachel. She runs into him early in the morning and asks “Yes or no, she said, I can’t wait any longer”(Lee 6).     Unlike his brother, Atticus is an expert in dealing with little children. His wise and firm opinions and deeds have had great influence on the characters of Jem and Scout as the novel proceeds. Miss Maudie says that “Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets”. He deals with Scout and Jem as if they are adults. For instance, he does not hesitate to answer Scout's question about the meaning of "rape", and he makes deals with his children and is committed to them. At the same time, Atticus understands that Jem and Scout are still children and they are bound to make childish mistakes. He finds excuses for their bad deeds and that makes him more patient with them than his sister Alexandra. For example, he says to her when she criticizes the language Scout uses that "bad language is a stage all children go through, and it dies with time when they learn they're not attracting attention with it." Atticus is eager to teach his children good values and practices through people’s mistakes and poor behaviour and their own mistakes in real life situations rather than by giving them instructions.     Scout and Jem Finch are able to develop a sense of empathy, selflessness, and honesty because they are raised by Atticus and are exposed to people in their family who exhibit these traits. Scout’s character is shaped by maturation as the novel progresses, she initially is a girl characterized as somewhat bratty and uncompassionate. However, with the counsel of Atticus who tells her, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it’ ” (Lee 30). Scout gains an improved sense of empathy once she has matured a few years. Being the daughter of an intelligent man, such as Atticus, serves Scout well in developing values. Atticus is not the only one in her family who affects Scout with his display of empathy, maturity, and fairness; her Uncle Jack has equally righteous standards. As a young child who picks up what she hears, Scout catches a habit of swearing unnecessarily.
