To Do Math or Not to Do Math
Today America ranks thirty-second in math. It is because students fail to see the benefits of math. The average scholar is more interested in extracurricular activities. While these activities

are enjoyable and can be educational, we must not stray away from the core subjects. Out of

the core subjects’ math ranks supreme in most aspects. Math can be cumbersome at

times, yet it allows for a more enjoyable job and life. When it comes to school subjects, Math is

the superior choice since there are many jobs requiring math, it prepares for higher paying jobs,

and it is frequently used in daily life.

Pick a career any career, and chances are it probably requires some form of math. Most jobs

even require a higher form of math. For example, I have a strong desire to become an electrical

makes around a hundred thousand dollars a year and the same goes for an engineer. Software designing is a fairly difficult job with a large reward, but as long as one is familiar with math a

job like this is easily obtained. Even the jobs with smaller forms math needed, like construction,

Roger C. Schank criticizes the way subjects are taught in school. I think he forgets that since our nation has instituted the idea of curriculum into the classrooms in 1892 America has advanced tremendously. We would not have advanced this much if the subjects taught in the classrooms were so useless and unimportant. Furthermore, Math is heavily involved in a nation’s economy and finances. Almost all economic decisions regarding a nation has math included in it. Whether to produce more of one good then another or how much money a nation should spend on its military is based off equations that math has given us. Not only does math help a nation but it also helps in small ways, such as in a family. If a couple decides to have kids, they should decide if they are financially ready for the kids. Will they have to make sacrifices on vacations or new appliances to have a child? All these decisions are solved through some sort of math.…

I remember from a book titled “Letters to a Young Mathematician” by Ian Stewart that he said, “Mathematics is the shared social construct created by people who are aware of certain opportunities. If math were a building, it would resemble a pyramid erected upside down. The taller the building becomes, the more space to build more.” I could not agree more. Mathematics is an opportunity. It should never stop growing, and neither should I. Ever since I declared mathematics as a major, I vowed to myself to always be willing to learn and to keep my minds working. After four years of education highly focused on mathematics, I have come to the conclusion that without an effort to delve into it, mathematics will remain as an ugly monster. However, once one sets foot in it, one will find nothing more delightful than mathematics. I loved learning mathematics for the past few years and I believe the best is yet to come.…

But for me, it’s a time where I can be myself. Math is involved in nearly everything in life. Whether it’s just simple addition when counting pennies or finding the perimeter of a newly built house. With math, you are able to learn how to do these certain things. Although it is confusing and difficult at times, I know that it will help me in the future. As it says in the article “What Can You Do With a Mathematics Degree?” by Laura Tucker, having a degree in mathematics can help in any career path. Math is also a big influence in my life because of what my dream job is; architecture. When I’m older I strive to be an architect, so math is very important for me to know - and know properly. An architect's job is based around knowing perimeter, area, length and all those types of things, which is what you will, at some point, learn in math. But math is not involved in just architecture. As it says in the article, “Math Career Resources” on University of California's website, engineering, pharmaceutical jobs and even jobs in the law career involve math. Therefore, no matter what job you decide is right for you, the chance is math will have something to do with it. Math has a very big impact on the…
