To Build A Fire By Jack London
The Yukon is known for it’s brutal winter weather, but can also hold great beauty. In the two short stories, “To Build a Fire” and “Up the Slide” by Jack London, the main characters are The Man and Clay. Clay is an advanced outdoorsman and knows how to get through the harsh Yukon environment. The Man is a chechaquo, or a newcomer, and is less familiar with the territory of the Yukon. In these stories, both men share similar yet different personalities; they longed to survive, though they took different paths to fulfill their destiny. First, The Man thinks smart by traveling light. He brings only the necessary tools he needs to survive on his journey, so that he wouldn’t be slowed down.     People take their lives for granted too easily today. We do not know when something could happen to us or a loved one. Unexpected events take place to people all the time. In the book Forgotten Fire Adam Bagdasarian tells the real life story of how his uncle survived the Armenian Genocide in 1915. Vahan Kenderian, Adam’s uncle, was only twelve when many events started occurring. These events were unexpected and tragic in many ways to not only Vahan and his family, but also all of the Armenians. In a short time, Vahan lost his home and family and, to survive he was forced to live a life he could never have dreamed of. He went through many struggles and saw many horrors that a boy of that age should not have to go through or should have seen. Though, most of these events were very traumatic and life altering, Vahan was able to learn important life lessons as a result of the events. He was a strong and confident young boy and even through all of the hard times he still remained strong and was able to grow not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. The three most crucial events that helped him learn life lessons were when he witnessed his two older brothers’ murders, meeting a girl named Seranoush who became his friend, and how he had to work hard and fight for a place to live and survive.…

    In the story London describes the harsh weather that he had experienced.London describes the weather as being -75 degrees, and the dangers of that weather. The man is travelling from one area of the Yukon to another camp. He is traveling alone except for a dog. London writes “The trouble with him was that he was without imagination. He was quick and alert in the things of life, but only in the things, and not the significances. Fifty degrees below zero meant eighty-odd degrees of frost. Such fact impressed him as being cold and uncomfortable, and that was all” (To Build a Fire 27). The man does not understand the danger of this setting. Jack London’s time in the Klondike also influenced the conflict in “To Build a Fire”. Which is man vs. nature. The man has to get to camp before he freezes to death.     I. In Greece the polis of Sparta was the number one military authority for the people and for the time period. There was nothing that the Spartans could not do when it came to war. From the time that Spartan men were born, they were evaluated for their future services to the Spartan society. Each baby was sent to have the ten, ten, one test done on them as explained in the novel, The Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield. This test was to check and make sure that there were no deformities. The air was little and there was little food and thirst became a big problem as so did the heat. Then the train stop in Kaschau in Czechoslovakia and a German officer stepped in and told all the Jews in the train that they were know under the German army authority and to give them all there gold and silver. The Jews where treated like dogs and threaten to get shot if anyone went missing. After that the train continued to its destination, with in the train there was a woman named Mrs. Schachter a woman in here fifties started to cry out “Fire! I see a fire! I see a fire!” she did this many times and the Jews got tired of it after a while so the beat her, so she would stop crying. Once they arrived to their final destination Auschwitz she scram fire for the last time, but this time there was fire and shortly everyone had to get off the train the air smelled like burning flesh. After getting off Elie Wiesel was separated from his mother and sisters with he never saw again but stayed with his father. After separated Elie Wiesel saw as children and old where being burned and hoped it was all just a dream.
