The street which has been chosen for this assignment is high street in the small city.This street is a good example of observing some inequalities and differences which are demonstrating themselves ,in more or less obvious ways and compare and contrast them with some of those found on City Road ,Cardiff.It will explore things such as : change over time ,compete use of the space gender, material infrastructure all of these launch out some differences and inequalities in patterns, which could be applied for any street in the world.
High street is the longest street in the city centre,but in contrast with City Road ('making social lives DVD'2009),it is much smaller and hosting fewer variety of shops,pubs,restaurant, clubs,takeaways.Over the course of the years ,many changes has taken place ,the most dominant one is the alterations to old buildings ,as they have been leased by larger businesses such as Starbucks,Coffee one and Subway .They have arrived mostly due to new social demands,as a local college has expand on their courses and that led to more students moving in. However ,that has created major problems for small businesses ,mostly,traditional local cafe's ,which have been there for generations. Some of them have now seen reduction in custom ,are struggling or have actually closed down,as they could not keep up and compete with them .As a large chain companies have bigger economic resources and small businesses cant afford a higher leasing fees. As Blakeley observes :'reshaping of society ,which is constant reshaping ,creates some winners and losers.It creates new inequalities and differences and it might reinforce existing inequalities and differences' . ('Making Social Lives on City Road’, 2009, scene 3).
This is a similar to a social and economic changes on City Road as it has caused some differences in the type of people who use it, as it is mainly occupied with restaurants and bars for students. This has made inequalities for some...
