Define difference and inequality, and provide an example of each on City Road.

Difference:- A way that people and things are not the same There are many differences in everyday life. In people it could be age, gender, sexuality, the way they dress. Things could be buildings and consumables.
City Road has many differences within the street and its community (Open University, 2014a). An example of this is two of the eating establishments. Taste buds Café (Open University, 2014a) is used by people for many reasons, employment for some, a place to eat. Its menu of home cooked foods reaches a wider consumer, creating a good sense of community. Unlike the Kebab shop, (Open University, 2014a) situated next door. Though, there are some similarities the differences can be seen, a take away service, used by younger people after they have been socializing in the evenings. Therefore not giving the same sense of community.

Inequality:- Is when things are not equal. This could be when 2 people have the same job, and a younger member of staff is paid a lesser wage.
An example of inequality shown in the video of City Road is John Arthur’s case (Blakeley and Staples 2014, p. 26) who through circumstances beyond his control, led to him being introduced to alcohol by his father at the age of 6, resulting in him being an alcoholic at the age of 10 ending with him being taken into care. This leading to a lack of good opportunities, in turn resulted in him going to prison. He has now been homeless for 6 years with only his dog for company. (Word count 261)
