Gawad Miriam Throwback
Bernadette Centeno

The Department of Communication celebrates another successful year of “Gawad Miriam Para Sa Komunikasyon 2014” on August 18, 2014 at Paz Adriano Little Theater. The theme is “Kwento ng Isang Matagumpay na Kabataan” that celebrates not only those students who excel academically & in co-curricular activities and awarding of Dean’s Listers, but it's also a throwback of what are the CommSoc last year’s activities.

The program are opened by Ms. Jem Aguilar and Ms. Iris Keza who talk about last year’s Communication activities like GMAlearniversity with guest speaker, Ms. Kara David, MYX forum and Pepito Manalotour. They also talked about the students who excel academically then and now like the awardees for best in thesis. They also discussed about the last year’s activities such as: Team Building Seminar (TBS) in Tanay Bakasyunan Resort, Bidyofest winner "Malikmata" and the people who won last year’s raffle. They also talked about how great the communication professors are.

Award-winning children’s book author and illustrator Mr. Robert Magnuson inspired the Communication Arts students with his life story since he was still a kid, up until he graduated in Miriam College, until to his present life. He read one of his children’s book entitled “Porcupirate plans the day” in which he wrote this story while his father is going through two weeks of hospitalization and his brothers had left abroad with their families and he’s the one left to take care of his dad.

“In conclusion, where do our stories come from?” he said after reading his story. He said that, we all have stories to tell, it may be a story of our self, or other people’s life. But try to think this, where did all these came from?

“The simple answer is they’re everywhere, if you can’t see them you just need to slow down and look around” that’s how he ended his speech.

On the first day, the students gathered themselves and went on a fun walk around the plaza and headed back to the school campus. They said it was so energizing knowing that they are having so much fun walking with their schoolmates, chatting with each other while people are watching them, staring at their shiny shirts. Oh! Not to forget, they already wore their official jersey shirts with colors green and yellow with three stripes of grey on the shoulder. After awhile they headed back to the COT lobby for the Thanksgiving Mass. The mass ended with fireworks and at the same time the COT Faculty, whom we treat as our parents pampered us and prepared a small snack for everybody. After a sip-on-a-soup and bite on a bread, everybody went upstairs at the HRM Function Hall for the Opening Program and cutting of ribbon. The Campus Administrator- the woman of the hour- Prof. Grace Bunda, spared her time rushing upstairs and gave us her inspiring message. After that short but meaningful message- our Dean, Prof. Anecito Ganancial officially opened the COT exhibit that the students anticipated the whole day. Visitors from different schools in the Municipality of Dumangas particularly the…

HERE ARE COUNTLESS FORMS of narrative in the world. First of all, there is a prodigious variety of genres, each of which branches out into a variety of media, as if all substances could be relied upon to accommodate man's stories. Among the vehicles of narrative are articulated language, whether oral or written, pictures, still or moving, gestures, and an ordered mixture of all those substances; narrative is present in myth, legend, fables, tales, short stories, epics, history, tragedy, (frame [suspense drama], comedy, pantomime, paintings (in Santa Ursula by Carpaccio, for instance), stained-glass windows, movies, local news, conversation. Moreover, in this infinite variety of forms, it is present at all times, in all places, in all societies; indeed narrative starts with the very history of mankind; there is not, there has never been anywhere, any people without narrative; all classes, all human groups, have their stories, and very often those stories are enjoyed by men of different and even opposite cultural backgrounds: I narrative remains largely unconcerned with goad or bad literature. Like life itself, it is there, international, transhistorical, transcultural.…

The program was simple, yet very meaningful for everyone. The program started with an invocation given by Marielle Rosales, and the ceremonial toast. After that, dinner was already served. After eating the delicious meal prepared by the caterers, the last will and testament of the Seniors was delivered by the Student Council Organization President, Emmanuel Joseph Mamaril. The speech was very formal and contained the legacies of the seniors that they would like to pass down to the juniors. The much awaited “Who is who” among the Juniors and the Seniors came next, which contained personalities from the 4th year and their counterpart 3rd year student. This part of the program was presented by Mr. Orient Rex Repollo and Mrs. Ma. Fatima L. Montoya. The turn-over speech, given by Maria Cecilia Hiyao, the president of the Senior Class Organization, came next. She delivered her heartfelt speech…

Every minute when I am sitting on the bleachers kept me on thinking about what would happen for the next minutes. I prepared myself. I set my camera, I fed my hungry tummy, and practice myself shouting and yelling. Then, my course began.…
