As the fog lifts and the sun begins to rise over Torrey Pines golf course cliffside, I can’t stop myself from staring into the vast Pacific Ocean that forms the perfect early morning backdrop. The salty ocean breeze briskly flashes across my face as I approach my shot from the tee box of the third hole. A dramatically set two-hundred-yard downhill par three, encased by ocean cliffs, safeguarded by a colony of trees to the right and an enormous sand trap that spans the entire front of the green. An intimidating setting for even the most seasoned golfer, or worse, an opportunity for the average golfer like myself to succumb to the pressure. Just like the person I’ve been paired with for the day, I’ve never played this course before. As I…

Even so, a lot of newcomers and intermediates do not have their golf swing on plane. This golf swing becomes an action which gets embedded into their muscles’ memory which becomes increasingly difficult to unlearn and turns into a bad habit. Not getting the golf swing on plane is the primary cause of not striking straight – slicing, hooking, pulling & pushing shots. And you’ll uncover that you’ll start to compensate with your alignment because you get good at regularly generating one or two of these types of misses. This leads to being punished on the course when you actually hit the golf ball…

The first step in the process is gripping the club, which influences the amount of control that is obtained during contact with the ball. A fundamentally sound grip helps the player create power and good feeling at the same time. Start by holding the left hand palm up and placing the grip of the club into the palm in a way that it runs from the base of the pinkie through the middle of the index finger. Then, clasp the left hand around the shaft so that the club is comfortable but stable in the hand. After the left hand is firmly positioned, completion of the grip can be accomplished by placing the right hand below the left in a similar manner. The right hand can be connected to the left in one of three ways: the overlapping grip, the interlocking grip, or the ten-finger grip. In the overlapping grip, the right pinkie overlaps the left index finger, while the right pinkie interlocks with the left index finger during the interlocking grip. The interlocking grip does not allow the club to twist while swinging, which positively affects the impact of the ball. My personal grip, and the most comfortable grip in my opinion, is the ten-finger grip. This is where all ten fingers are on the club with no overlapping or interlocking of fingers occurring. These instructions are…

I was terrified I would hook the ball to the out of bounds ground and spoil my 45. “Just keep your head down, stare at the ball, and rotate your shoulders completely back,” my teammate said. That indeed is what I did. I drudged up the fairway with the feeling of a wet towel on my shoulder. As I saw my yardage, I knew I needed to club down and let the ball roll up to the green. I chose a simple 9 iron from 118 yards to the middle of the green. My ball hit the front of the fringe, and had a slight roll inches from the green. I made my way toward the green with my teammate to decide my next stroke. “You’re sitting at a 42,” she said. I tried not to overcomplicate it, but I could not help from overthinking. I decided to putt from the fringe, leaving myself a ten or twelve foot putt for par. This was it. I looked at the hole from every angle, trying everything I could possibly attempt to get the ball to the hole in one stroke. I slowly moved my shoulders straight back and through to the hole, but missed the hole itself. I finished out the last putt and knew I accomplished a 45. All of the stress was released from my…

On the first tee, I was as nervous as an athlete competing in the olympics. I met my two playing partners, Jacob and Connor. Jacob was a towering fellow. Connor was a short, stringbean like me. Unexpectedly, my drive was smooth and rolled down the fairway as if I hit it on a tarmac. Jacob and Connor both hit their drives right down the pipe as well. As our group, made our ascent to the green, we all drew our putters like pirates would for a sword fight.…

Golf allowed me to come out of my shell and be a part of something larger than myself. I never truly felt that I was a part of anything until I got involved with golf. I embraced the role with honor and fulfilled it to the best of my ability. My role gifted me the chances to travel with the team, even if I wasn’t playing in that match, as well as bring small treat bags for the big tournaments my teammates endured.
