Time Zappers
Time zappers can me a negative, or a positive, given the situation. Sometimes you need to just sit in front of the TV or go out with your friends, relax and waste time as you let your mind shut down for a while. As much as I enjoy just plopping down on the couch and watching the latest Kardashian drama unfold, ok well maybe not that but you get the point, I tend to get caught up in clearing out my DVR and before I know it I’ve spent the last 4 hours laying there covered in chip crumbs and my fiancé is nagging me to get up. I know there’s more productive things I could be doing like finally building that bookshelf she’s been on me about, or getting an early start on reading a chapter for school, but being the glass half full kind of guy I realize that I’ve just worked upwards of 60 hours this last week not including school and I needed to just disconnect from the world for a few hours on a cold Sunday afternoon. Then there’s the time I waste at work, whether driving43 hours one way for a 30 minute meeting or playing a round of solitaire while I’m waiting for a phone call to finish up a project or order, or maybe taking that extra 10 minute smoke break. One of the things that annoy me most is that I have customers that stretch up north to Waterloo, down south to Burlington, and to the far abyss that is western Nebraska, and on occasion I have to travel and it usually takes twice as long to get there than I actually spend with that customer. I enjoy a nice road trip but if you’ve ever driven through Nebraska you know that it takes all of your willpower to stay awake, and when you’re constantly driving to the same places it gets old, fast. But it’s the job, and it’s what has to be done, and the nice thing about it is when I’m on the road I don’t have to pay for a single thing. Not that bag of chips from Casey’s, that prime rib dinner, or the 10 or so beers it takes to muster the courage to sleep in the Bates Motel somewhere between Kearney, NE and Satan’s

Attention Getter: We all need our cars to get us from point a to point b but with the price of gas being so high, many people ride the bus or train to save themselves from shelling out money at the pump. Spending money is an emotional process for most working class citizens, especially if it’s something that we need daily but alas we don’t have a choice. We will always have places to be in life, but if only gas were less expensive, commuting wouldn’t be as taxing on our wallets.…

Here I am captured in this irritating street where all I can do is listen to music and look at Facebook. I am waiting for cars to start moving and continue with their destination. Little do I know that ahead of me is a two hour traffic. I am already tired, bored, and furious. I cannot believe I took this road home instead of my usual route. Why do I have to try new things? I should stick to what I know. While I sit in the drivers’ sit I am still wondering why I had the bright idea of taking a new way home, a way that I had little knowledge of.…

Time is a major concept in life. We are taught to preserve time and not waste any of it. But sometimes it feels like time is running away and that we are not getting a grasp of it. For me as a student, when I get busy into my studies or when I play video games for leisure I sometimes don’t note the time and get…

The radios blasting, your thumbs are tapping the steering-wheel, and your speedometer needle is between 75 or 80 as you drive on the interstate. "Instead of enjoying the ride a person is trying to get from point A to point B as fast as possible," is an opinion stated by the author about interstates and for most cases its true. Interstates bypass all the towns, cities, and highways that people would not notice unless they drove on the highways instead of the interstate. Interstates are long, mostly straight, flat roads that lead from one place to another. On the interstate, semis loom over you like giant beast, cascading you and your entire car in a shadow as it rides by. Certain towns, shops, or cultures can only be found on blue highways, roads written in blue on a map, these highways can take you somewhere you have never been before. "Driving on blue highways pull you back in time. You look around, and it is America in…

I wake up in the morning feeling great. My cheese is perfect and I eat a healthy breakfast containing a piece of bread and a slice of my newly made fresh lamb cheese. I pack my rv, feed my pet, fill-up with gas and head out on the open road. My vehicle’s engine is purring almost like a kitten and I’m pleased to read a highway sign that sets the speed limit to 80 mph for the next 290 miles. I plan that I can get to the end of texas and be on my way in New Mexico in 10 h 48 min (733.9 mi). About halfway through my journey I decide to stop for lunch. According to a street sign i'm on S broadway St, tx and I find a lovely restaurant called George’s where I buy a gyro sandwich for $5…

The immense distances between major North American cities, gave rise to the substantial system of highways currently crisscrossing the continent from San Diego to New York. Over the span of eighty years, this widespread and complicated road network served as the foundation for a flourishing society. Whether expanding in really hot areas or shrinking in the freezing cold, expressways provided reliable access and transport. Gasoline was plentiful and driving was less a chore and more of a pleasant event, and smog was only a vague thought in the back of your mind. Driving became a pleasant family outing and lengthy commutes became an acceptable…

We left the school at 10:30 a.m. on a bright and sunny Monday morning. Our original plan was to leave at 10, but Cutter was late. We managed to get twelve people and all of their luggage on a little, tiny route bus. By the time we reached Clarendon, we realized that our little buses main air conditioner had broken. We were very upset, and the reason we were upset is because we were going to be in a bus without an air conditioner for five hours. Even though it seemed like the trip took days, we finally made it to the Dallas area. In the end we calculated that it took us almost eight hours, and this wasn’t counting the hour we spent in Cabela’s. After we went to Cabela’s we went to our hotel and checked in. Since convention started the next day, we just stayed at the hotel and relaxed.…

Road tripping is supposed to be fun and exciting. It gives me an opportunity to jump in the car and explore something new. In the summertime 2008 when I got my 99’ Dodge Intrepid back from the previous accident, I begun my road trip to Yellowstone National Park in early morning. As I drove down the road, I soon realized that I had never been anywhere alone before. This was a new feeling for me, one of strength and fear rolled into one. My trip was nerve wrecking because I faced a certain problems with my car that I have never experienced before, but it taught me a lot about how to maintain my car.…
