Ti Amo Research Papers
Lots of great music was released this summer. Six albums in particular stood out.

Phoenix’s Ti Amo released on June 8th and is a bright and fun album. It captures the sound of a pleasant and warm Italian summer, with hummable electronics and synths. Phoenix is known for their blend of synthpop, alternative rock, and disco, and on Ti Amo they showcase that blend in spades. Two of the best tracks are “Lovelife” and “Goodbye Soleil”.

The Best of Big Star is a compilation released on June 16. It collects the best of early 70’s power pop band Big Star’s music. Fronted by brilliant songwriters Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, Big Star was a fantastic band that blended classic rock, folk, and introspective lyrics to create a unique and highly

With their new album released on September 1st, American Dream, frontman James Murphy brings his heady mix of post-punk, dance, and Madchester music to create a record that’s a breath of fresh air. Songs on this record are full of funky basslines and atmospheric guitar. Key tracks include “Other Voices”, “Tonite”, the thrilling “Call the Police”, and the David Bowie tribute “Black Screen”.

Indie rockers The National released their seventh studio album Sleep Well Beast on September 9th. Filled with angular guitars, pensive piano, and thoughtful lyricism, the album is full of what The National does best. Frontman Matt Berninger steals the show with his emotive and colorful vocals. A few of the greatest tracks on this album are “Walk It Back”, “The System Dreams In Total Darkness”, and “Sleep Well Beast”.

On a sad note, Grant Hart, drummer and songwriter for Hüsker Dü, died on September 13. Hüsker Dü was one of the most influential alternative bands of all time. Fueled by the songwriting of Grant Hart and Bob Mould, they defined alternative rock in the 80’s. After they broke up, both Hart and Mould pursued solo careers, and both made fantastic records. If you’re interested in his music, listen to Hart’s solo material and his work with Hüsker

The initial track on the album is Barnes' rendition of the chilling "The End of November, 1963," which evokes the fear and disillusionment people felt when they heard the news that JFK had been assassinated. "Kennedy's death," says Barnes, "was a powerful international event, but back then it seemed to touch all of us personally." Besides the initial track, Barnes sings "When the News Came Through," "The Golden Cup," "The Day Jack Kennedy Died," "I Got My Dreams Just Like You, "He Was Born to Live," and…

In this short but in-depth interview, Guy Raz introduces Dave Matthews as one of the founders of the Dave Matthews Band, a worldwide phenomenon and multi-platinum group whose music has influenced the rock/jam genre as well as all other styles of music. Their new album, Away From the World, is the second they have produced since the death of LeRoi Moore, a founding member of the band. When Raz asked what the meaning behind the album title was, Matthews replied “It kind of is suggesting that all of us are sort of removed from the world, in a way, in our minds. That we're all in the same boat, even though we're sort of locked in our own heads.” The album, according to Matthews, is similar to years past, with stories of love and sexuality, but with new ideas, including the state of the world and where we are all headed, the issues we all face. The songs featured on the album are all wonderfully written, with the intent of portraying the message of having an open mind.…

    Steve Young Biography

Know for consistently moving and being an unexpected ear opener, Steve Young served up something his own entire flavor. “Camouflage” seemed to be a favorite for Young, reviving it since the 2nd state lounge. Played heavily on the appearance of this well dressed and practically unloading this unexpected wave of lyrical distinctiveness. To say basically, “they never seen it coming”. Being a fan of Biggie Smalls, Young performed a cover of “Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems”. Noticeable attributes about Young are his lyrics and songs are quite relatable, if not understandable, and different than a Xerox copy of the exaggerated, cookie cut music of today. That itself is invigorating. Between his originals "Coffee", about the motions of being in love and ultimately moving on to the next cup to “Black and Blue” touching on the on going situations with police from both views, “Dreamweaver” was an inspiring song to close with. Young said it was about following your dreams, a lyric for example “You never know your hand until you’ve dealt it” was truly realistic. With that, Lyrical Miracles is a steeping stone to his…

Whether I’m having a bad day at school or technical difficulties aboard Galaxy One on my way to Mars, this track won’t fall short of soothing my mood. The song kicks in with a head-bopping crunchy guitar riff, layered over a smooth reggae guitar. In the opening verse Bradley Nowell makes references to Bob Marley, Half Pint, Mike Tyson, The Boomtown Rats, and the Beastie Boys which would remind me of life on planet Earth during my permanent residency on Mars. Bradley Nowell’s vocals and Eric Wilson’s bassline are what make this song so powerful. When I heard the words “Oh well the bars are always open, and the time is always right And if God's good word goes unspoken, well the music goes all night” The happiness and free-spirit in his voice translates every time I hear the song. The bassline throughout this song brings the entire energy together. Midway through the song it breaks into “439-0116 when you’re down with Sublime you get Funky fresh” and at that point the wailing guitar solo forces me to jump around and dance before going back into the verse.…
