Thyrotoxic Crisis Research Paper

Thyrotoxic crisis, also known as thyroid storm is a form of hyperthyroidism, where there is too much thyroid hormone released rapidly over a short period. “The condition may develop spontaneously, but is usually occurs in individuals who have undiagnosed or partially treated Graves disease and are subject to excessive stress, such as infection, pulmonary or cardiovascular disorders, trauma, seizures, emotional distress, dialysis, plasmapheresis, or inadequate preparation for thyroid surgery” (Heuther & McCance, 2012, p.455). Thyroid storm is a medical emergency that requires immediate interventions, left untreated it may lead to heart failure or death.
