Some people with Thrombocythemia may not have signs or symptoms and this condition may only be discovered after routine blood tests. Most people with thrombocythemia are more likely to have serious signs and symptoms. A blood cot may be the first sign that something is wrong. Some signs are headache, dizziness, weakness and fainting, chest pain, numbess and tingling in the hands or feet, changes in vision, a slightly enlarged spleen, easy bruising, bleeding from the gums, or even nose bleeds. The signs and symptoms of a high platlet count are linked to blood clots and bleeding. Blood clots mostly develop in the brain, hands, and feet, but can also develop in the anywhere in the body, like the heart and instestines. Blood clots in the brain can cause chronic headaches, along with dizziness, and strokes may occur.
This may lead to an intense burning and throbbing pain felt mainly on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Other symptoms may include changes in speech or awareness, confusion and may even pass out, seizures, discomfort of the arms, back, neck, jaw, or abdomen, and even shortness of breath. If bleeding occurs it often affects people with platelet counts higher than 1 million platelets per micoliter of blood. Signs of bleeding include nosebleeds, bruising, bleeding from the mouth, gums, or stools. Although bleeding is usually associated with a low platelet count, it also can occur in people who have high platelet counts.
