The next message is realizing that although the students are only twelve and thirteen years old, they are going through a lot of different issues. Learn to understand what your child may or may not be going through. In the movie Tracy had many issues, from her parents getting divorced to not being liked in school. These issues in turn caused her to cut herself as a way to feel pain and also feel the need to hang with the wrong people. These choices she made were the start of her downward spiral from an honor student to having to repeat 7th grade.
The next message is educating students, this is for both teachers and parents. Both must teach the students what’s right and wrong, as far as under age sex, the use of drugs and many other matters. In the movie the students believed that since there was no act of penetration, that they didn’t have sex. When in turn there are many was to engage in sexual acts and not have that penetration.
As parents we have our own issues and problems, but we must set them aside and open our eyes and pay attention to our kids. In the movie, Tracy’s mom was recovering from substance abuse as well as just going through a divorce. She also was struggling to make ends meet in her current profession. These issues blinded her to the fact that her daughter was in deep trouble and suffering from her own problems. If her mom would’ve just paid more attention, these problems could’ve been averted.
By simply caring and paying attention to Tracy from either her teacher or mom, this young lady would’ve been able to stay on the right path and stay away from trouble, but mistakes from adults have tremendous effects on kids these days. If you only care about how a student performs in your classroom and not about how they are outside of school, then you have lost the battle before you start.

Their views on sexuality education for elementary children were very apathetic and largely opposing, whereas, when asked about sexuality education in middle school and high school, they were more neutral and favorable to the idea. The audience has yet to be able to envision the significance of why sexuality education is so important in society today. The movie begins with Tracy, the main character, as a normal teenager whose life seems from the outside “ok”. However, even at this point in the movie, there are hints of Tracy’s inner pain and discomfort or distress with her world. Tracy lives a tough life. Her parents are separated, and do not have a good relationship. Tracy lives with her mom and brother in a suburban low to middle class neighborhood. Her mom, Mel, is a recovered addict, who works as a hair dresser. Her dad, Travis, is a somewhat rich executive, who works all the time and barely visits his family. Her older brother, Mason, does not get along with Tracy, and sees her as a somewhat loser. Morever, Mason does spend time with his dad more often than Tracy. The article implies that the sexual education curriculum should include lessons on “abstinence, purity, resisting sexual pressure and avoiding high-risk situations” (Fraga, 2011). In my opinion, preaching to students about the importance of abstinence and forcing them to believe that sex before marriage is sinful, is absolutely absurd. We cannot stop children from being curious and wanting to explore because it is a natural human behaviour. Telling our children to simply abstain without giving further information about sex will only increase their curiosity; this is human nature and it is normal behaviour. Therefore, abstinence-only programs are rendered ineffective and even inaccurate because they exclude the discussion of important sex ed topics such as contraceptive methods. As specified by researchers, 80% of the abstinence only curriculum contained false data on the effectiveness of contraceptive methods as well as religious beliefs which were tried to be viewed as scientific facts (Kendall, 2013). Nevertheless, author Brian Fraga claims that “educators also have a responsibility to ensure that teenagers who are choosing to have sex understand the potential consequences of their actions and know how to keep themselves safe”. Although I disagree with his initial statement claiming that abstinence plays a major role in the curriculum, I strongly agree that teachers are responsible for teaching at least the basics of sexual education as it is crucial for children to know about and thus practice safe sex.
