Three Words That Come To Mind
When I think of conflict, three words that come to mind are conversation, problem, and people. These words come to mind because in conflict, there is typically a problem between two or more individuals and it involves conversation (sometimes heated conversation, but conversation nonetheless). As Margaret Heffernan began to explain why Frank actively sought after conflict, the reasoning and opportunities that come from conflict indicated that a disagreement tends to have a negative connotation to them; however, if it can be viewed positively, many experiences can be great for all individuals involved.     Philosopher Emerson once said “every coin has two sides; so do conflicts”. In the pages of human history, conflicts are unavoidable and while major conflicts such as war have been evil forces in the world it can also produce very positive results. That is not to say conflict is entirely positive. When conflict arises there are those individuals that show unexpected qualities; those assets that are sudden and unforseen. These assets can be seen in the movie The Sapphires through the character Dave and on a global scale through Mandela. Unfortunately there are also those individuals who in the midst of conflict express unexpected negative traits. This can be seen through the characters Gail and Kay in The Sapphires and most recently through Eddie McGuire.     What is conflict? Why is it good to have a positive attitude during conflict? Why, for so long have humans cruelly mistreated each other if “they are all equal?” Conflict is a fight, battle, or struggle, especially a prolonged struggle (dictionary.com). Anne Frank gives an insight on what life was it was like to not know if you would live for the next day. In Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne is living through the turmoil of all the jewish people as her and her family hid from the Nazi’s. Although the situation she is in is horrifying she manages to stay positive minded. Another story, Dear Miss Breed, a story where all Japanese people in the United States, citizens or not, were placed in internment camps because of the air attack on Pearl Harbor. Miss Breed, a children’s librarian at the San Diego Public Library, gave kids that were put in these camps hope by donating books to them and also by writing letters back and forth to them trying to give them some positivity even in their time of crisis. Both of these stories show that having a positive attitude is the best response to conflict, especially in time of war.…
