There are three different ways a representative is able to carry out their representation. The three styles of representation is delegate, trustee, and politico. Delegate is the theory of representation stressing the lawmaker’s role as a tribute of the people who reflects their view on issues of the day (Losco 264). In other words, an elected representative will vote the way their constituents would want them to, regardless on their own opinion. This would help the representative get reelected since they are allowing the constituents influence his decisions by voting how the citizens wanted. To put it differently, trustee is an elected representative who listens to their constituents opinions and then uses their own judgment to make the best decision. This can at times cause problems because their decision may go against what the constituents might want. An example of trustee is same-sex marriage is now legal in all fifty states. However, before the decision was made to allow same-sex marriage for all states, less than half the states allowed same-sex marriage but with this law it overruled what the constituents believe which made it possible for gay couples to get married. Finally, politico is theory of representation in which the lawmaker attempts to balance the views of constituents, interest groups, and party leaders with his or her own ideological leanings (Losco 264). In other words, an elected representative who acts as a trustee or delegate, depending on the issue. Politico is the representation that most members of Congress use since it balances the interests of voters, interest groups, and party leaders along with their own
