The famous Chinese philosopher, Lao-Tzu once stated “A journey of a thousand miles must start with a single step”. This idea suggests that all journeys need a starting point and many events involved on the journey will hold great significance. This is one of the many ideas I have learnt from my study of “Journeys” during my area of study analysis. To journey is to move from one point to another, not just in a physical sense but in imaginative ways as well. As we journey we learn new things about ourselves, the world around us and life in general. This is particularly evident in the prescribed text “Away” by Micheal Gow in which the characters go through much pain and suffering to ultimately be cleansed by the natural world surrounding them. Characters such as Coral, Gwen and Tom find themselves taking journeys “away” from their usual existence and learn much from this. Micheal Gow is well able to express these journeys through his elaborate use of technique in representing the ideas of his play. This essay will explain a multitude of ideas I have learnt about journeys with reference to “away” and its technical representation. I have also learnt much about the concept of journeys through the related text of “An Occurrence at owl Creek Bridge”. Therefore this essay will also explain ideas that I have learnt about the concept of journeys through this short story and I will relate these ideas back to my prescribed text of “Away”.…

It had been many years since I had last seen Joe or Biddy. I walked up to the house of my old apprenticeship. Inside the window I could see Joe, conversing with Biddy, though I could not hear what about. I walked around to the front door and knocked, knowing that they were not expecting me. Joe answered and was instantly joyous at the sight of me. “Ah, Pip! How great it is to see you again!” he said as he ushered me into the kitchen. Biddy was also extremely glad to see me. We all sat around the table where Biddy had already prepared some tea.…

The hard heels of her buttoned boots made a hollow banging sound against its wet boards, loud in the warm and breathless quiet. Across the pond a bullfrog spoke a deep note of warning. Tuck climbed in, too, pushing off, and, settling the oars into their locks, dipped them into the silty bottom in one strong pull. The rowboat slipped from the bank then, silently, and glided out, tall water grasses whispering away from its sides, releasing it.…

The wicked stepmother suggested that the man take the children to the forest at daybreak and leave them in the forest never to return home again. I can’t imagine the thought of my young children being left in the forest with all the wild animals lurking around. They will surely be eaten alive by the tigers and lions, the man said. The man very sad, but desperate finally agreed.…
