The pig displays this trait in many ways, but the most significant event that displays his cleverness occurs after the wolf fails to blow the third pig’s house down. At this point in the story, the wolf tells the pig that he knows of a nice field of turnips; he says that he and the pig should leave together at six o'clock to get some dinner from that field. This is actually a way of deceiving the pig in order for the wolf to get him out of the house and eat him. However, as mentioned in the story, “Well, the pig got up at five, got the turnips and was home again before six” (Liberty of Congress 12). As shown, the pig was clever enough to get his turnips before the wolf did so that he did not encounter the wolf; he knew to be careful and make sure to avoid the wolf, which displays his clever personality. An example of this was at the ending of the fair when the pig encounters the wolf for a second time during the wolf’s third attempt at gobbling up the pig. The text states, “So the little pig went off before the time, as usual, and got to the Fair, and bought a butter churn, and was on his way home with it when he saw the Wolf coming. Then he could tell what to do. So he got into to hide, and in doing so turned it round, and it began to roll, and rolled down the hill…” (20). As written, the pig had what may seem to be a useless item with him, a butter churn, at the time when he saw the Wolf coming. Fortunately, since the little Pig was prepared, he quickly found a way to escape his death. His preparedness was the fact that he found a quick and fast way to scare the Wolf away.
