Thornewood Hall: A Short Story
Chapter One
Thornewood Hall

The darkness concealed us. Even amid the bright and silvery light of the satisfied moon. We crouched behind a tree, taking turns peeking at the house. For a moment, nothing happened. But then the ghost flashed blue in a tangled sea of tattered sheers. The drapes dropped to the floor and it was gone in a ripple of gloom.
I turned to Seth—a tall slim super sleuth clad in a tweed trench coat and deerstalker cap—and found him stealthily tiptoeing sideways through the thigh-high weeds. “Okay, we’ve investigated Miss Sims’ contention, and she’s correct—this place is haunted. Let’s go”
“I need to get a few of the particulars straight first.” I whipped out last year’s birthday present, a black, 8-gigabyte mini digital voice

“I’m Madison, and this is my associate, Seth. Don’t let his empty stare fool you. He’s famous around Whodunit for his thingamabob abilities.”
Once when an old guy with killer breath (long story) kidnapped my dog, Clue (longer story) and then locked us inside of a house with only one window and zero ventilation (don’t even ask) Seth had wrapped a sheet around his arm and busted the windowpane. He managed to toss one end of some braided dental floss around a tree trunk. He tied the other end to the bed. Twist slung a bent wire clothes hanger over the floss and slid to the ground. He gave us the thumbs-up and we did the same.
“It’s nice to meet you.” Mr. Greene laughed and smoothed his dark button-up blazer down over his rounded belly. “You know, I’ll bet those screeches came from an owl caught inside of the mansion. If we call the police and it’s only an animal,” he looked at the other men standing next to him in the midnight gloom, “they’ll think we’re kind of silly. Wouldn’t you agree?”
“He’s right. We have a couple of flashlights. Why don’t we all go inside and take a quick look around.” Mustache turned to us. “You two go home. It’s late, and your parents are probably worried.”
“Yeah, okay,” Seth

Thirsty I made my way towards the kitchen to pour myself a glass of Cranberry Pomegranate juice. Sitting around what’s left of the dining room table one of its hinges obliterated merely three table legs left as a support. A branch from the oak tree near the kitchen window kept tapping against the walls and windows as the wind blows. This branch at night when the murky moonlight blooms against the massive tree meticulously resemble an oversized man with a knife trying to break into the house. I often dreaded coming down the stairs for a cup of water or juice late at night when the lights were off. The terrified image and screeches sound on the window always send me scurrying right back to my room and ducking under the covers trembling for dear…

The passage begins with extreme imagery about a terrifying, “merciless” (16), “endlessly hungry” (41) creature of darkness with an “insatiable craving for the taste of brains” (22-23) that would “eat the whole world” (26) if it could. The great horned owl is described to be the epitome of horror. Oliver is struck with trepidation as she “look[s] up and listen[s] to the… snapping of its hooked beak” (4-6).…

Instead, their eyes glanced at the darkened woods, wondering if there was something following them like in one of Chief Black’s stories. While he knew the ghost tales weren’t true, Collin’s sensitive hearing did pick up the fact that there was indeed something out there, but he wasn’t alarmed at all as his nose told him exactly who it was. Finally, Collin found his voice. “You said that you are new here. Where’d you live…

Snow started to shower as if on a peaceful rainy night and I look for any opening, trying to escape this creature that was following me. I could make out a large building figure ahead and ran directly to it, exhorting my energy as I advanced through the shivers in my body and aching bloodstained legs. An old tainted church-like mansion appeared as the fog cleared and I forced my way up the frigid sleet hill and onto a rusty pavement beside the building. I leaned upon the 5-metre tall wooden door trying to hear any sound coming from inside the outsized building, trying to sense any civilisation as the sky slowly turned into a rich black shade. I knocked onto the polished door, trying to depict a reaction from the owner that might've lived in this secluded place. Lights started to rapidly appear above the door and forming a luminous loop around the entire mansion, whilst the door blew open with such force that I was knocked back onto my spine. I tried to scamper away on my knees as a spine-chilling sensation started to form from what was a supernatural…

It seemed like I was wandering into a different dimension. My senses were becoming acquainted to new feelings: guttural whispers, excruciating odour, ponderous glass-like air and the cemented, pungent, taste of death! As I opened the door candlelight rose to greet me but who lit them? I was informed that the secluded house I was purchasing has been unoccupied forever.…

A faint growl was coming from inside a hole which used to be concealed with branches. Theodore stepped on a tad too angrily, and ended up in a tunnel. The sap was dripping from the ground. It was like being laced with honey. He could feel half a dozen tentacles crawling eerily on his back. He shook the spider off (at least he hoped it was only a spider), but even more of them were creeping around.…
