Thorium vs. Oil
Using oil to fuel the world has started to become a huge issue to us and the environment. Some people believe that switching the resource that we depend on could cause mass disruption and many lost jobs. This may or not be true, but not changing from oil could cause even more devastation on our planet. The Liquid-Fluoride Thorium Reactor (LFTR) could be a great replacement because it doesn’t produce greenhouse gas, its less dangerous than oil, and very little of it is wasted.
Thorium, unlike oil, does not cause greenhouse gas emissions which would cut the world’s pollution vastly. It does not produce lethal toxins such as plutonium during usage. It is also is much more abundant than oil and we wouldn’t have to make dangerous mines to collect it. On top of that, it is completely used. LFTR’s use 98% of the fuel (thorium) they are given, this leaves only 2% that must be safely disposed of. All in all, thorium would be a much greener and a much more effective fuel.
Oil is abundant, easy to use, and creates jobs, but so is thorium. Oil also emits 20 pounds of carbon dioxide per gallon of gasoline, which is 20 pounds more than thorium emits. Today’s reactors use about 5% of the fuel given, leaving 95% to be disposed of which can be a problem. This much waste causes us to dispose of it in a way that causes a lot of harm to the ecosystems such as dumping in lakes and rivers. Oil is also non-renewable, meaning that once we use it all, we won’t have it for a long time. Running out of fuel today would cause chaos, and the U.S. alone uses over 20 million barrels of oil per day. That’s why we need to switch now. Even though oil won’t run out for a very long time, it’s better to switch early.
Thorium would be a clean and inexpensive replacement for oil. Oil is nonrenewable, dangerous to work with, and is destroying our planet. We need to focus on saving this planet one step at a time. The switch to thorium would definitively be a huge step, for the earth,

    Continued apathy and negligence of of the environment is just not viable any longer. The only fossil fuel that is capable of lasting into the next century has the most concentrated, detrimental, and long term effects on the environment. Oil has some of the most horrific and immediate effects on wildlife when mishandled. Oil spills, while on the decline, produce abhorrent conditions that harm not just the wildlife present, but that ecosystem as a whole. Additionally, oil is the biggest player when it comes to fuel in the transportation sector, which is notorious for the greenhouse gas emission that arise from it. If those were not reason enough to make significant strides away from oil, oil is not projected to even make it into the second half of the century. Given this, and that we have the resources to pursue renewable energy, it is simply impractical to continue to maintain oil as a primary fuel source. Natural gas seems to me to be equally dangerous despite having the lowest emissions of the three because it is deceptively harmful. On the surface it burns clean but often methane gas leaks in transportation and even the enormous pool of issues that fracking leads to are too frequently overlooked. Again, irrespective of these, natural gas must be abandoned soon or we will exhaust natural gas reserves before oil is totally depleted. The solution to the fossil fuel problem lies in renewable and green energy. Solar energy is still young but it has enormous potential. Wind energy works very well but it can be a nuisance and an extreme hazard to airborne wildlife. Hydroelectric energy can be more widely implemented but the dams are liable to disrupt spawning patterns of some fish, particularly salmon. Unfortunately our technology is not quite up to speed economically with our wish to rely completely on renewable energy, thus many non-renewable energies are recognized as viable options to power our economy (Fraser, 2011). The United States’ current position on diversifying with non-renewables consists of oil, natural gas, coal, and the less spoken of, nuclear power. Nuclear power is the process by which a reactor contains a slow explosion called fission, which gives off a positive net amount of energy that can be harvested. Of course the social stigma around nuclear is so strong that even if there were an undiscovered completely safe type of nuclear power plant, justifying the complex science would be challenging. After events such as Fukushima, Chernobyl, and Three Mile Island, the vast majority of society believes nuclear energy is nothing more than a death wish. Contrary to popular belief, a safer alternative in nuclear energy has been discovered and has been gaining popularity over the past few years despite the recent tragedy in Japan (Sorensen, 2011). Though newly rekindled, the non-mainstream nuclear power known as Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) was discovered in the 1960’s and had been proved to be a very attractive option to the more popular Light Water Reactor (LWR). It all began with nuclear physicist Alvin Weinberg, who would graduate from the University of Chicago soon become research director at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Weinberg was given the freedom to experiment with designing multiple types of nuclear reactors including the prominent LWR’s that are in commercial use today.
