Into the Wild is a movie based on the adventure of Chris McCandless as he breaks away from his civilized life and travels across the country to live in Alaska. Chris bases his journey off the core beliefs of the novel Walden by Henry David Thoreau. The novel is a description of Thoreau’s life as he exiles himself from society and returns to nature, living in the woods surrounding Walden pond. Thoreau expresses his beliefs about the negative aspects of civilization, money and the importance of self reliance and simplicity. Having a troubled life, Chris is intrigued by Thoreau 's concepts and seeks to incorporate them into his own life. The movie displays the path Chris takes as he tries to follow in the footsteps of Thoreau, but there are many differences in the life Chris leads and the one captured in Walden.…

Each person differently views the concept of plagiarism, such as is a view of Lewis’s first experience in 7th grade. As Lewis copies a text from a book for his school book report, he has no idea what plagiarism is and declares the concept strange to him. People restate and copy what other people say all the time. Ironically, as a…

"He keeps casting conformity behind him". Henry David Thoreau was never one to conform to society's norms. It is very apparent that this entire play's main idea is nonconformity. That is the way Thoreau lived his life. Many transcendentalists speak of what they wish to live their life as, however, it was Thoreau who went further than just discussing Transcendentalism; he put it into practice when he refused to pay the poll tax that supported the war efforts. He lived in the way he viewed as correct, rather than the way society told him to live. For example, when he completely leaves society behind and goes into the woods to thrive on his own and when he went against the teaching methods of the time period and of religious views. He never wanted to be like anybody else, and this play reflects both his personality and beliefs. If he was told to do something that he seemed unfit or contradicting everything he believed in, then he just wouldn't do it.…

Dames explains in detail his views and actual definitions of plagiarism and copyright infringement. His comparisons of plagiarism to a “rumor mill” and “the scarlet letter” demonstrate his views on plagiarism’s lack of standards that create an unfair system to those accused of committing plagiarism. In the end, Dames advice to his audience is to be careful and cite all references used when writing.…

All of these men are prominent iv the literary society, one wanders if there is a reason for Stegner to include them in his essay other then to strengthen his argument. I believe he added many to boost his ranking and status among his readers. There is a small community of authors who write about nature and likewise the community of readers is about the same size. Therefore, it makes sense that Stegner used Thoreau's highly known name to increase the validity and importance of his essay. Same with the way he used Robert Frost's quote, "The land was ours before we were the lands" (Stegner 206) to sum up his essay. He is taking a poem by Robert Frost, a world-renowned poet, and adding it to the end of his essay. It does fit in nicely, but I feel there is also another motive, to gain more respect from his…

Love that word; plagiaphrasing. After reading our fellow classmates discussions; there seems to be a unanimous choice on the type of plagiarizing that will give us the most difficulty in detecting. Paraphrasing. Also, I face the same issue that was identified in your discussion post. For example, the quote; "to discover I have used almost the exact verbiage from the text." (Caldwell, 2016, p. 1) at any rate, this is understandable; if the author has done their job correctly in convening to the reader the validity of their work.…

Writers commit plagiarism every time they reword sources without crediting original authors or fail to reference their sources appropriately. Plagiarism through paraphrasing can happen in two cases. First, writer may choose to substitute some words from the original with different vocabulary, rearrange words, or rearrange the whole paragraph. In this way, he or she presents stolen information expressing it with his or her own words. And second, writer may try to use exactly the same vocabulary and stylistic constructions and use them with respect to another context. Plagiarism occurs in both cases.…

Sometimes, authors and writers express things in such a way that no one else could ever express it better. In these cases, it's totally fine to use their words and expressions in our own writing, as long as we attribute credit back to the author. The article that I gathered the quote from went on to say that plagiarism is "dishonest"2 for two reasons. "...[T]he speaker is, by failing to say otherwise, leading the listener to conclude he or she is the true author of the speech."2 This is very true, and actually very deceitful. It's accepting undue and unmerited credit, when credit is not due. Plagiarism is also wrong because it is "...[t]he denial of credit to the real author."2 "The person who actually comes up with the fresh, clever, quotable turn of phrase, the one that captures a moment or a feeling in a way that you recognize as different and original — that person deserves a salute."2 The real author is due the credit they deserve, and it is wrong to make it appear as though someone wrote "the fresh, clever, quotable turn of phrase,"2 when they really…
