Thomas L. Friedman's The World Is Flat

“Farmers across the globe are beginning to throw in their boots and let robots do the dirty work” (Briggs). Technology in this world has grown over the past decades and we have become more and more reliant on our technology. Agribots and drones is the newest and latest thing in this world that could really boots our crop productivity. Thomas L. Friedman, author of The World is Flat, argues that, “As an individual, in a flat world is figuring out how to make yourself as an ‘untouchable’” (280). He then describes ‘untouchables’ as, “People whose jobs cannot be outsourced, digitized or automated” (280). In order to distinguish ourselves from others and be an untouchable we need to acquire unique skills and provide value to our work. Although many

In other words, different aspects of our workforce, like technology and farming, will be coming together in order to build the economy around the productivity of the agribots. Agribots and drones will build the economy of the Yakima Valley because they will be harvesting faster and more efficient making it easier to sell quickly and earn a profit. Being able to explain something complex, like robots, and make it easy for someone who has no idea how they work or what they can do, will ultimately make agribots so much more desirable. “If you can explain the complexity well, you can see the opportunites better” (Friedman 289). Explainers are a major necessity for agribots and drones because farmers need to know how to handle the robots. Also, explainers could help build the business by clarifying the benefits of using agribots in different parts of the world. For example, agribots and drones will help with crop monitoring which was unreachable and insufficient with just humans doing the labor. Also, agribots will protect our farmers from all the harsh chemicals, like pesticides, in agriculture. Heba Soffar, telecommunication engineer of Alexandria University asserts, “The robots can reduce up to 80% of farm’s use of pesticide”. I think this is huge because this means our farmers will be staying healthy. Ultimately, explainers will have a huge significance on the Yakima Valley for agribots and drones.
