Thomas And Beulah: A Poetry Analysis
Poetry Analysis was by far the most difficult essay I have written in any writing class. Breaking down the book Thomas and Beulah to understand what I was going to write about was even more difficult. Reading Thomas and Beulah was fun since I had to think outside the box and put things together. I found myself looking up multiple words because I did not know the meaning of them. As I was figuring out what the poems meant I came across so many different ideas. One thing I did enjoy about this essay was how interesting the poems were and how It had so many different meanings. It took me quite some time to read the poems and gain a full understanding of it. Once I understood the poems, it was time to come up with a Thesis, technical aspect and how it was going to connect. That took some time and some of Professor Vinson’s help. I spend quite some time with Professor Vinson trying to figure out how my essay was going to come together. Once I had an understanding of what my Theme, technical aspect and connection was going to be. It was on to writing. …show more content…
My first obstacle was introducing my evidence from the primary text. I found myself stuck on this due to how in the poem it was said. I eventually figured it out and once I introduced it, I had to explain it and provide enough explanation as how it proved my thesis. As I put it all together, more and more ideas came to mind. For a while I found myself writing and putting all thoughts into the essay. I provided my evidence, then explained it. When I sent a draft to Professor Vinson he replied saying how I needed to explain how it was going to prove my thesis rather than summarizing my evidence. I than put much thinking into it and just began to correct it. I found myself stressing a lot because I did not want to make any mistakes. I was very careful to cite everything and make sure everything was out together the write

This Rhetorical analysis essay was very difficult for me to get started but once I did I made many changes before I came into class with my first draft. I started by making a web trying to get my ideas onto paper so that it would eventually make it easier to organize into a paper. I have a hard time with organization so I thought pulling quotes and basic ideas I wanted to bring up in this essay would make it flow a little better. I started out by using the Faigly book to and looking at the layout for how to write a rhetorical analysis. After that I answered all the questions, which then inevitably got put into the outline to help further get my points across. The thing that helped me the most was only writing a little bit at a time rather…

Time has gone by, which means things have changed. Hollywood has become good at changing any type of story to better fit the American eye. Anywhere from Cinderella to Hansel and Gretel. Hollywood will take a normal story and make a movie that will be more modern. They did the same thing, that they’ve done to a lot of other fairy tales, to Beowulf so it would be more appealing to varied audiences. Hollywood changes the epic poem so much in the movie to draw people's attention, make it a good versus evil kind of movie instead of flat like the poem and making it a more sexy/ emotional movie.…

What I need to do to improve and how I plan to do this: In future, instead of getting paralysis, or worrying that what I am writing about is not valid, I need to use what knowledge I have, back it up with theory and be confident that this is what’s needed. It would be better to get an essay in on time, than delay submitting it due to worry that it isn’t ‘good enough’.…

Does your first line contain the name of the essay and the author’s full name? Your first line should look something like, but is not limited to, this: In the essay, “Why Should I be Nice to you? Coffee Shops and the Politics of Good Service” Emily Raine explains that baristas of the world should be rude to their customers. Once you state the author’s full name, you may simply refer to the author by his or her last name. Check to see if you did that. If not, cross out the author’s first name throughout. I am really, very, like so excited that you are about to check for word choice. Circle any first or second person that you see, as well as filler words like, “like,” “really,” and “very.” Check to make sure that your analysis is long enough. Does it reach the end of the page? If not, draw a line to the bottom and write, “too short.” Also, make sure that it is not too long. I will only read 3 lines over one page, and after that, I will start taking off points for your analysis being too long. The reason I say this is because you need to learn to formulate your arguments succinctly.…

I had no difficulty writing out the essay because of the numerous different drafts I typed out. I went over my ideas and organized my work through the outline you gave us which helped a lot when writing the essay. I gave myself enough time to skim through my book to find sufficient quotes that would help me answer the prompt and help support my evidence. The outline alone helped me organize my paper because it split up several parts of the paper through: quotes, claims, warrants, and the thesis statement. The different activities we did during class with our papers helped…

In September when I was assigned my first essay it was a mess. I found myself just typing words that didnt seem to all come together and make sense. Most of my issues, however, were in the first introductory paragraph. I did not know how to develop an introduction that grabbed the readers attention and let the reader understan what exactly I was going to discuss in my essay. I found that the best way to do this was with a strong thesis statement at the end of the paragraph. A useful technique of writing a thesis that I had come to understand was that writing the essay first, and then reflecting on the essay, often leads me to develop a much stronger thesis statement. It is much easier to write a thesis that introduces what you're going to write about after you write the essay. This is a method that I learned after a few essays in september. I slowly watched my essay grades improve dramatically due partly to a stronger thesis.…

In all honesty, I had very low expectations of English 103. I have always preferred math and science over English and did not enjoy English 102 very much. Despite my low expectations and preconceived notions of what English 103 would entail, I actually enjoyed myself this semester. Specifically, the poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Eliot changed my demeanor. I should start with the fact that I am a feminist and anything about equality, gender roles, or stereotypes intrigues me. This poem’s take on what true masculinity entails entranced me almost immediately. The class spent on this poem was the lecture I participated the most in. After the lecture, I was taken aback by my amount of participation because I do not often like…

The first characteristics of good, effective writing is that it should have a clear, well-defined purpose. “ In many writing situations, part of your challenge will be determining your purpose, or your reason, for writing”(Hacker 3). When the teacher assign the paper, sometime they won’t just give you the topic of your essay. You need to fingur out what the essay about. Many instructors write their assignment prompts differently. “Instructors may include more questions or talking points than you can cover in your assignment, so rank them in the order you think is more important. One area of the prompt may be more interesting to you than another”(Purdue Writing Lab). Choosing your point and then you can decide your purpose. Are you going to support this idea or against the idea? What we wrote this whole term is MLA paper. After you know the purpose of your paper, what you need now to form a working thesis. In a good writing, the thesis statement needs to be clear. I wrote three papers by now and I think they all have a clear thesis statement. For example, in our second paper, which require us to choose specific person who is an outlier in your view. After all the factors Gladwell wrote in his book Outlier, I thought my purpose in this paper to convince people that the person I choose is an outlier. What I need is to find information that makes my choice satisfied the characteristics of an outlier. After knowing my purpose, I started to work on my thesis statement. My thesis statement in this paper…

During writers craft the genre that I enjoyed writing most was poetry. I love everything about poetry. Poetry is a piece of writing that can be interpreted in many different ways while being written in one. My favorite part about class was writing poetry and the many different types of poems we wrote. I was not too big on the fact of reading poems in class sometimes that where too hard for me to understand. I am more of a reader who likes to know what is going on without having to read a poem over and over again to figure out what the poet was trying to say. I like more of the simple poetry that can easily be read by a ten year old and still have a lot of meaning to it. Poetry as so many different unique ways you can express yourself in certain formats. The type of poem that I love the most is the Shakespearean sonnet. The reason why I love to listen and write these poems the most is because I tend to like the ones that rhyme more. Although I know that poems that don't have to rhyme are said to be even harder to write it doesn't rhyme and still has to catch someone's attention and entertain them in some way. I think it is always a test and a fun way to get into your poem by trying to having meaning in the poem, at the same time have it rhyme, and most importantly trying to have it make sense. The reason I am so into rhyming is because growing up as a kid, my parents will always read me bed time poems that always rhymed and from that point on I only saw a poem as a piece of writing that meant a lot through the words you use and how they rhyme with one another. The poem that I heard every night was “Mockingbird”. What I learned a lot during writers craft while writing poems is when you write a good poem, one you really like, I immediately write another. Usually one poem was my peak for the night, and if I write another one then I can maybe turn a great poem into a masterpiece. There’s only one way to find out. Also I learned that…
