I am presenting this evening my Informative Speech. That was then….and this is now. I call Culpeper, Virginia home. Though, the small town I knew growing up was Springfield, Virginia. I would like to tell you and share some of my memories about growing up in Northern Virginia and of its changes that have occurred over the decades. Growing up Springfield really was small town USA. The normal commuter was traveling south onto interstate 95 from Washington, D.C. which is now is exit 169A and a permanent memory etched in my brain. Throughout the 1970’s there was only three very small strip shopping malls the served a country setting population. Then the 1980’s came, and flooded the suburbs with malls. People still went into Washington, D.C. to shop. Springfield is now a Metropolis area and has hundreds of stores and serves a much larger population now. Springfield’s, Falls Church, Annandale’s population was considered the melting pot of Washington. To the east of my house, Franconia Road was nothing but farm land and horse country. I lived in a time when kids could ride their bikes safely for a mile or two at a time. Riding our bikes on the main roads was considered the normal. Even when the flow of traffic was adjusted for the populations work schedule, people shared the roads within community. That was true but unlike now VDOT puts up a sign for drivers, saying to share the roads. Of course that was then and this is now. People were moving in and moving out area. The Military turnover was high due to the pentagon was only less than 30 minutes away then and now travel time can take up to 1 hour and 45 minutes door to door. After the Vietnam War, houses were especially built for the military and war veteran’s and for service members and their needs for their growing families. Big government as we now know it, had created jobs for so many service members then and now the opportunities for employment for the veterans are limited due to the lack of...
