This Is Water Analysis
Last session we discussed the importance and the purposes of a liberal education. In class, we mentioned that new experiences help us be more intellectuals. In Kendi’s speech he encouraged the students to become intellectuals, meaning being open to new ideas and seek for ideas that challenge how they see the world. At the end of the speech, he says "I want you to make history, not be history. I want your work to be remembered , not be forgotten." I feel like this phrase inspired each of us who were reading this speech. In addition, we mentioned that routines force us to ignore the obvious. And, by ignoring the obvious we become unconsciously ignorants. …show more content…

In 2005 David Foster Wallace delivered the Kenyon College commencement address that was not the typical commencement address you would normally hear at a graduation. He starts off his speech by telling a story having the idea that even the most “important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about.” He talks about living in the adult world that these soon to be graduates will enter and how it can be very dull at times. And how learning about how to think about the choice we make in our life, the choices we make will impact our life whether it be a good impact, or a bad impact.…

The thought for a great society would bring excitement to many, especially in our modern day. We see such a broken community and the cost of education is outrageous. President Lyndon B. Trouble the Water is not solely about Hurricane Katrina and its calamitous aftermath, but it is an honest, raw footage that displayed how America treats its poor and displaced citizens, particularly in time of dire need. Given U. S impressive response to humanitarian crises, and use of the top of the line gadgets to combat enemies in war-torn zones, the disappointing non-governmental response in New Orleans begs to question the capability of the U.S to response to disaster within its own country. A closer look at the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina will reveal the unfortunate truth of negligence, overt racism and insensitivity. Though all encompassing, this essay examines the documentary from the lens of structural violence as it relates to the general poor and African American.…

Throughout high school we have always been tasked with different materials to read; whether it be Shakespearean texts, short stories, poems, or just books in general. No matter what though, I love to read. So any text I take in, I am always eager to absorb the words. The texts I have read at the time may have just felt like assignments, but now as I am older, I can see the lessons to be learned within them and how they were a major aspect as to how I view situations in the world around me. I cannot pick a favorite text that I have read throughout my grades nine to twelve years, but I will review a few that made an impact on me.…

One of the key characteristics of a public intellect is the knowledge they possess and how they use it to incorporate change. According to Said (1993) a public intellects mission is to advance human freedom and Knowledge (Lightman, undated). Even though she was a college lecturer, disciplined within sociology, English and history, Dianne was also able to talk about a wide range of subjects outside her field. One of the ways she promoted change was using an authoritarian position by sharing her own knowledge and expertise which in turn allowed us to re-evaluate ourselves. This allowed us the platform to incorporate her knowledge into our discussions inside and outside the classroom. The act of sharing showed the variations of capacities and levels of acquired knowledge (Bini, 2010). This in turn allowed us as pupils to question our…
