    Maria Montoya Martinez was from San Ildefonso Pueblo. Born on an unrecorded date between 1881 and 1887 Maria was the oldest of five sisters. She started learning pottery skills from her aunt, at first just by watching her. At this time, traditional pottery techniques were being lost, but Maria and her family were trying to preserve the culture of art. By the age of seven or eight Martínez was making crude bowls and plates of her own. She received a well rounded education by first attending a government grammar and rudimentary school. Maria and her sister were selected to spend 2 of their formative years at St. Catherine’s Indian School. When Martinez returned home, she quickly achieved economic independence by mastering the craft of pueblo pottery. In 1904 she married Julian Martinez and they worked closely together. She created the pots and her husband painted them. After an archeologist had discovered ancient pottery, Maria and her husband were asked to reconstruct the pottery. After much trial and error, Maria successfully produced a black ware pot. She began developing new designs, shapes, and techniques for black pottery. She won many awards and presented her pottery at many world fairs and received the initial grant for the National Endowment for the Arts to fund a Martinez pottery workshop in 1973. Maria and her husband eventually settled in San Ildefonso, where they raised four sons and one daughter.…

    I really enjoyed watching the Maria Martinez short film. Prior to this movie, I never really thought about what the Natives and people back in history used to make pottery. After watching this film, I learned how creative the Native Americans actually were. I found the method that Maria used to make pottery very interesting. It was very cool to see her gather her own clay from nature and mix it with red and white sand. She then poured water into a pool of clay and wedged it together very delicately. It was so fascinating to see how Maria and her son fired their pottery. As they stacked their ceramic pieces in a pit, they used metal to trap the air and keep the heat in. This complicated process looked so easy to Maria and her brother. They had to use intensive care when dealing with the firing, and it was always a gamble for them on how their pots would turn out. I was very surprised when their red clay pots turned black after the firing. You could just tell how experienced the two of them were and how passionate they both felt about ceramics. Maria took great pride in the spirits and was always thanking them. She looked to nature for help and always found her tools in the environment. She is very creative when it comes to decorating and uses so many unique techniques. At age 85, it is very impressive to see Maria kneeled down on the ground and kneading her clay so quickly. She is extremely gifted in the arts and has a true talent for making pottery. I thought it was very interesting when she told us that she did not learn how to make clay form her mother, it was her aunt instead that taught and influenced her. I think it is very neat how Maria did not have much schooling and her pottery today is so famous and sold for millions of dollars.…

Because Maria had to provide fir her family, like many of those Dominican women from “Reaching the promised Land:, Maria is not finishing school and contemplating college, she is working in a flower shop removing thorns from roses with a controlling boss in a sweatshop environment. She handed her paycheck over to her family with disregard to her own personal needs. Maria’s family is dependent on her wages as a form of survival. When Maria finds out she is pregnant, she decides she wants a better life for her unborn child. She is fed up with how her boss treats her so she quits, and faces the guilt from her family. When she is presented with the opportunity earn 5,000 US dollars, the risks are not seen as being relevant. For a better life for her baby, she risk her and her baby’s life as a drug transporter.     Katherine Okikiolu comes from a mathematical family, her father is a mathematician and inventor and her mother is a high school mathematics teacher. Her parents met when her father left Nigeria to study mathematics at the same college in England where her mother was studying physics. Her father, the Nigerian George Okikiolu, has written more mathematics papers than any other Black mathematician. She is married to mathematician Hans Lindblad. Okikiolu earned her B.A. in Mathematics from Cambridge University in England before coming to the United States in 1987 to attend graduate school mathematics at UCLA the University of California, Los Angeles. There, she worked with two mentors, Sun-Yung (Alice) Chang and John Garnett, and was able to solve a problem concerning asymptotics of determinants of Toeplitz operators on the sphere and a conjecture of Peter Jones, characterizing subsets of rectifiable curves in Euclidean n-space. After her doctorate, Kate went, in 1993, to Princeton University where she was an Instructor and an Assistant Professor until 1995. From 1995 until 1997 she was a visiting Assistant Professor at MIT. Since 1997, she has been on the faculty in the Mathematics Department of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), first as an Assistant Professor. Also in 1996, Dr. Okikiolu spoke as part of the twenty-fifth anniversary celebration for Association of Women in Mathematics (AWM). In 2002, she gave the Claytor-Woodard lecture at the NAM meeting the Joint Mathematics Meetings.
