I. Introduction
Communication is a necessity for every human being. It serves as a foundation for planning and organizing, promoting motivation, altering individual's attitudes and especially, in socialization. Because of the fast growing industry of technology, the invention of computers and other devices made it easier and convenient. With this, the age of social media in which one can easily communicate with others using small efforts has begun. Social media is one way of satisfying our need to communicate with other people. In today’s world, social media seems to have become an additional appendage to our bodily systems because we couldn’t possibly last a day without checking our social networks for mails and what-not. And comparing to the primitive postal services before the dawn of time, social media has given us less trouble to channel our messages and it can make things happen with just a press of a button. Over the years, social media has been immensely developed and is now contributory not only to convenience in communication; the expansion of human intellectual minds has found a way to make further modifications with the social media resulting to wide spectrum of features it now possesses, including the power of information, great extents of affiliation, and a form of entertainment, as well. As technology advances, so does the way the world works with it. And social media is not spared from these revolutionizing technological advancements. People tend to forget the real function of social media in their lives; instead of using it as a device to solving their day-to-day problems, they end up taking actions that may be demoralizing to their own reputation or they may even be held responsible for others’ downfall. II. History of Social Media

A. Definition of Social Media
We’ve been using social media for acquiring newfound knowledge since before common era, but not everyone have an inkling of what it really means and, more so, its vital role in the society. Basically, social media is the shift on how people discover, read, and transfer information. It is an online tool that people use to share opinions, insights, experiences, perspectives and media itself, thus facilitating the conversations and interactions online between groups of people (Brown 52-53). Social media is also defined as a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0 and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content (Kaplan and Haenlein). The term social is derived from the Greek word “socius” meaning companion or human while media is defined as transmission channels used to store and deliver data (Wikipedia). So, combining the terms together, you’ll come up with “social media,” which literally means “transmitting and receiving of messages between two persons.” Social media is a diverse virtual world wherein people from different places and with ethnic variations may be able to exchange information, but by doing so, they would have to interact with one another while in the process of sharing their insights and beliefs in a wide range of topics. It builds an intangible and invisible connection between individuals; even if they’re not related at all, some kind of empathy link is instantly bonded between two or more persons the moment they start communicating. B. Social Media Before 1900

Several dates back to 550 B.C., the means of communication across great distances is a handwritten mail. A messenger carries the mails by hand and delivers them from one person to another, whether it’d be letters or packages, and this form of postal service would become more widespread in the succeeding years. This primitive delivery system is part of the evolution of the social media because sending information through the web with the use of computers is not what it just is. In 1792, Claude Chappe invented a brilliant non-electric instrument called telegraph that allowed a faster deliverance of messages over long distances than a messenger could. His invention inspired Samuel Morse; he made ramifications of Chappe’s prototype and electrically and successfully improved it. Telegraph may have lived shortly, still its reigning was considered to be a practical and commercial success. Otto von Guericke invented the world’s first artificial vacuum in 1660s and his invention made way for William Murdoch to come up with the pneumatic capsule transportation. The pneumatic post, developed in 1865, created another way for letters to be sent quickly between recipients and it utilizes underground pressurized pipelines to carry canisters that contain letters and packages from one place to another. Today, the world’s last preserved municipal pneumatic post system is located in Prague, Czech Republic. In the later years of the 1800s, two important discoveries happened: The telephone in 1876 and the radio in 1892. Controversies aside, Alexander Graham Bell invented the first gallows phone in 1876 which transmits and receives sound, widely known as the telephone. Telephone is a an instrument used as part of a telephone system, typically a single unit including a handset with a transmitting microphone and a set of numbered buttons by which a connection can be made to another such instrument (Oxford). In 1892, a Serbian-Croatian immigrant to the US, Nikola Tesla demonstrated the first complete radio transmitter and receiver system and is widely credited for inventing the first successful radio. Radio is an apparatus capable of both receiving and transmitting radio messages through electromagnetic waves between individuals, ships or planes (Oxford). Both inventions are still popular these days, albeit the modern versions are somewhat more complex than the first forms. Telephone lines and radio signals closed the gaps between people who are oceans and worlds away. C. Social Media between 19th and 20th Century

The creation of the electronic computers in the 1950s made way for the scientists and engineers to formulate theories and develop them into discoveries. As soon as the Internet was born, several packet switching and more sophisticated networks boomed from left to right that helped in disseminating information through the social media. In 1969, a dial-up technology and the first major commercial Internet service provider in the US was developed and this was called CompuServe. It was very popular between 1980s and mid-1990s, but people discretely began to stop using it for it had been prohibitively expensive for many, with $6/hour rates. By the year 1971, the first email was delivered and the two computers were just sitting right next to each other. Matter of fact, the first email sent contained the word “QWERTYUIOP.” As the year 1978 came, so is the BBS or the Bulletin Board System. BBS was invented by two Chicago hobbyists namely, Ward Christensen and Randy Suess, and their brilliant discovery enabled people to exchange data over phone lines with other users also logged in on the system. The 1979’s UseNet, an early bulletin board, were first conceived by two Duke University graduates namely, Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis, and they connected their alma mater to the University of North Carolina with the use of the UseNet systems. The first copies of early web browser were also distributed through this and it enabled users to read and post messages to newsgroups. By the 1980s, home computer systems were becoming more advance and social media was becoming more developed compared to its standing 20 years ago. The Prodigy Communications Corporation was introduced in 1984 which offered its subscribers access to wide spectrum of networks. By the following year, AOL or American Online service was opened and it offers customers a wide span of digital distributions. Four years after the opening of AOL, the 1989’s World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee, and a year before that, the 1988’s Internet Relay Chats, or IRCs, were first used and was popular until 1990s. By the 1990s, more launching of social media sites were made and among were: Tripod (1992), Geocities, The Palace, and EarthLink (1994), TheGlobe.com (1995), AOL Instant Messaging, Blackboard, and Six Degrees, the first recognizable social media (1997), Move On (1998),Napster, Blogger, and Friends Reunited, the first online social network to achieve prominence (1999). The late 1990s opened new opportunities for web developers and programmers to create a more modified social media sites for the society’s disposal. It is no doubt that this was the year where social media became more and more sophisticated than it ever was. D. Social Media Today

As blogging was a success in the prior years, variations of social media sites began to explode. In the early 2000s, social networking websites and digital online communities gained prominence, such were: LunarStorm and .Com (2000), Wikipedia, a widely used online encyclopedia (2001), Friendster (2002), MySpace, LinkedIn, LastFM, Photobucket, Second Life, and Del.icio.us (2003). By the year 2004, Facebook, a social networking site only intended for Harvard College students then, was launched by the ever-famous Mark Zuckerberg. It was also in the same year when these sites started: Digg, Flickr, Care2, Multiply, Ning, Orkut, Mixi, Piczo, and Hyves. The following year, YouTube came out and it created an entirely new way for people to communicate where they can upload and share videos. Yahoo! 360, Bebo (Blog Early, Blog Often), and Reddit were also established in 2005. By 2006, Twitter was launched as a social networking site and the word “tweet” pertains to the messages sent using this site. It was also in the same year when Facebook became available to all users around the world. Both of these sites still remain as the most popular social networks on the Internet. Between the years 2007 and 2008, other sites like Tumblr, FriendFeed, Spotify, Ping, Group On, and Kontain began popping up like mushrooms. And by 2009 and 2010, Foursquare, Instagram, Google Buzz, and Pinterest all started to fill specific social networking niches. Today, anyone who has an Internet-enabled computer could go online and take participation in wide variety of social networking sites. Truly, it has changed the way how an individual communicates with their fellow humans, where everyone was spared the risks of face-to-face conversation. As technology advances, so does the way the world works with it. III. Advantages of Social Media

In today’s online world, people arguably find social networking to be just a distraction to students and that it has no real positive effect to their lives. They may be right in some angles, but widening the perspectives concerning social networking sites, students can still benefit from them. One of the most distinct vital roles of social networking in a students’ life is that it connects them to the world. Through social networking, students may contact some professionals that could possibly help them with their brain-racking homeworks. Suggestions given by these masters may ease the weight off of a student’s shoulders considering that the discussion is about a field that they have the most knowledge of. Another benefit of social networking among teenage students is that it increases their learning. Not only funny and nonsense information is shared through social networks, because the reality is completely different from what it seems. Students may find info graphs and links shared by their peers and teachers that could give them solutions to their queries. In this fast-paced world of business and advertisements, students can also learn the art of marketing through social networking sites. Practicing the rudimentary steps of buying and selling at a young age, students can make out of this as training for the future, especially if they will be taking a course that has something to do marketing or business-related. Everything created by humans has their own advantages and disadvantages. It just basically depends on how you are using it and the same goes for social networking sites. You should think carefully before you make comments and decisions through social media. 2. Instant Messaging

Instant messaging or IM involves the sending of messages in real-time, like a phone call, to another Internet-user, and in a faster and simpler way than the email. It enables you to limit the persons you prefer to speak and the user can also respond immediately to these messages. Effective communication is what most businesses aim for. And as the prominence of IM software platforms is revolutionizing the business communities, business owners have utilized it to replace primitive communication ways. Like with email messages, IM can be a text record and functions like a quick conference call that allows employees remain at their desks. It is a great way to get people on the same page—the same Web page, literally. Sometimes face-to-face meetings and more formal communication are what is needed—but IM offers a big deal to all business groups. IM is good for group chat that allows one-on-one or group text chatting and saving chats and log file history would be easier. Using IM would be best to replace conference calls, and will keep record instantaneously. IM also offers connection between team members from off-site locations that doesn’t require physical presence to let a co-worker know his supposed work, and sharing and archiving files inside chats is easier. It can also be a complement to communication where one won’t have to excuse himself while in a meeting and just have to silently type his message to the person wanting to have a conversation with him. Language barriers are also broken down between business entities coming from different countries with the help of IMs. The IM offers a solution for miscommunication because instead of talking through the phone and having difficulties of understanding one another with heavy accents present, clients and employees can just simply text it through. IM has also proven its worth as an alternative to long-distance phone calls. It enables a more speedy and affordable way of communication between clients and employees because there are lots of IM platforms that are free of charge and can be used immediately by just downloading it into a computer or even mobiles. 3. Electronic Mail

The rise of the electronic mail, or just email, has positively affected the society in many ways. With its constant availability, the effects have increasingly been reported to be all beneficial, especially for the business proprietors. Email has reached wide spectrums of possibilities and this is very evident in the business world. Businesses use email to solicit new clients, keep their employees posted for new comings and provide services to their customers. Email has made communications easier because there’s no need to rush to the post office to send messages for transacting purposes. Advertisements posted by small businesses became very affordable with the use of emails because there are lots of free web mail services on the Internet. Emails can be accessed through laptops or any form of Internet-enabled gadgets, regardless where you are. Undoubtedly, electronic mail has created a revolutionized way for businesses to expand branches of their businesses and also, companies can explore methods of using email to achieve important goals and efficiency. 4. Aside from using mobile devices for sending text messages and making phone calls, consumers today use mobile devices to let their social networks know where they are, using location-based mobile networks that enables them to interact with their friends and business associates, while they are on the go. The latest 4G mobile network seems to be the answer for every mobile device owner. The 4G mobile network is amazingly speed. From general chit-chat to propagating breaking news, from scheduling a date to following election results or coordinating disaster response, from gentle humor to serious research, social networks are now used for a host of different reasons by various user communities. The digital age has revolutionized the way news is disseminated, virally and immediately. Because of the instant publishing capabilities of social sites like Twitter, we're able to both individually broadcast and communally watch as events unfold in real time across the globe. Twitter may yet be the news ticker of our time. For an instance, social media revealed the true extents of the impact of super typhoon “Yolanda” in the Visayas and served as a vital tool in immediately addressing the needs of people severely affected by the storm, saving many lives in the process. Catherine Graham, co-founder and vice president of the Humanity Road, Inc., said social media tools, such as Twitter and Facebook, have empowered the public and responders to tell the story of the impacts of the storm as well as find solutions to urgent needs (Yahoo News). Social media has also played a huge role in spreading the news of Bin Laden's death since the information broke on Twitter. Before CNN or The New York Times confirmed that U.S. Navy SEALS did in fact kill Osama bin Laden, millions had already taken to their Twitter and Facebook pages to virally disperse the information. In Turkey, social media has proven an important tool for the demonstrators. Video footage of the police raid on a peaceful demonstration against government-backed plans for the redevelopment of Gezi Park and dramatic images were filmed by one of the protesters and posted online. Tens of thousands of people have re-tweeted a message to show support for the protesters. Turkish broadcasters have failed to report on the demonstrations. Instead, demonstrators have used websites that stream live video (Hutchinson). 2. Educational Aide

Researchers at the University of Minnesota have discovered the educational benefits of social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook. "Students are developing a positive attitude towards using technology systems, editing and customizing content, and thinking about online design and layout. They're also sharing creative original work like poetry and film, and practicing safe and responsible use of information and technology. The Web sites offer tremendous educational potential," says Christine Greenhow, the principal investigator of the study, while proving that social networking sites offer more than just social fulfillment or potential job contacts, also have implications for educators, who now have a vast opportunity to support what students are learning on the Web sites. Interestingly, researchers found that because of Web sites, very few students in the study were actually aware of the academic and professional networking opportunities. Making this opportunity more known to students is just one way that educators can work with students and their experiences on social networking sites (UM News). Talking about social networking sites, Twitter might be a handy tool for bringing the outside world into the classroom. Students are able to ask questions and receive answers in real-time. Professors, in an effort to stay more connected to their students, may set up Twitter accounts specifically for engaging in educational discussions outside the classroom. Twitter can be a lifesaver if a question arises regarding a book or grade. Twitter is another way that college students might network to find internships, study abroad opportunities, or reaching out to industry professionals. Shy, online college students may find it more difficult to make study buddies. By using Twitter to collaborate on school projects, online college students may keep in touch by setting up Skype times, sharing interesting links related to the projects, and the communication is instantaneous. Twitter is a world of information, most of the time the data is there. It could just be a matter of finding it. From downloading free eBooks, polling people, or trying to find the best place to spend spring break, Twitter is bound to have what you are looking for. Education and Twitter can be synonymous if Twitter is used in a way that benefits educators and students. Just because it is a popular social media site, doesn’t mean that it is only a form of distraction. 3. Medical Information and Health Advice

Many patients and family members of patients with chronic illnesses use a blog to create an online support group for others with or caring for patients with a particular ailment. Healthcare professionals have also found a variety of benefits on YouTube. For example, medical schools have placed recordings of lectures online and they have created instructional videos to cover a specific topic or allow for teaching procedures. Patients on the other hand may take videos of an abnormal, but not reproducible, physical finding such as a seizure to show to their physician. Physicians have been using these sites for a few years in their personal lives, and now slowly introducing this technology into their professional lives as well. Patients have found a variety of new uses for health-related social media (Fisher). Another research of Demi & Cooper Advertising and DC Interactive Group shows that more than 90% of people ages 18-24 trust health information they found on social media channels. One in two adults use their smartphone to look-up health information. Patients use the Interwebs to talk about the care they received: 44% of people said they would share positive or negative experiences of a hospital or medical facility, and 42% said they wouldn't hesitate to post comments about a doctor, nurse or healthcare provider on social media. More hospitals have a social media presence, and 60% of doctors say social media improves the quality of care (Freeman). Advances in technology have been most noteworthy in healthcare. The web has become the dominant vehicle for nearly all of our health information; access to online information has created an opportunity for non-clinicians and patients to take a more active role in healthcare. The Internet has given rise to social media whereby individuals can access and share information interactively. These patients are referred to “e-Patients;” these “educated” people are “empowered” and “engaged” by the ability to contribute to their own healthcare, accessed in real-time, by many different mobile formats (Soyer). 4. Business Opportunities and Advertising

Many professions have embraced social media as a way to better connect with their customers. Via social media they can receive constant information and feedback about what the consumer is interested in and looking for with respect to products and services. Many corporations have their own Facebook page where current and potential customers are able to communicate with those who have decision-making abilities at the company (Fisher). Social media has been a key player in the job search process today. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+ allow employers to get a glimpse of applicants’ profile, the confines of a résumé, cover letter, or interview and to offer job seekers the opportunity to learn about companies they’re interested in; connect with current and former employees; and hear about job openings instantaneously, among other things (Smith). Maintaining a professional image online is important in today’s job market. One in five employers, research applicants’ social media profiles before ultimately deciding to make a job offer (Honigman). According to “On the Efficiency of Job Search with Social Networks,” the first step in using social media involves creating professional profiles that exist separately from personal ones. Specifically, current students should create and maintain professional LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook accounts (Schreiber). IV. Disadvantages of Social Media

A. Cyber-bullying
A lot of people rely on social media to communicate with others by online chatting. A social networking site really provides a much easier way to convey messages, but it can also be a harmful tool against others. And one of the very infamous ways to make serious damage to someone through a social media is the ongoing cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is a form of cybercrime where one deliberately humiliates another person, whether it is in text or a shared video intended to harm a certain person (Wikipedia). This kind of action is particularly widespread in Facebook or other social networking sites, and a person who does this bad behavior is called a cyber-bully. A cyber-bully harasses his victims by sending them mean messages or even threatening them and spreading rumors online that could be hurtful to the intended person. Cyber bullies can also steal the email account of their victim, pretend that he’s the actual owner of the account and disclose some circulating sexually suggestive pictures or messages about the account user. This inhumane practice could also lead to serious cases of cybercrimes. Matter of fact, a blogger in Saudi Arabia, named Raif Badawi, was imprisoned after he performed apostasy, or the total desertion of one’s religion. Apostasy is highly illegal in Islamic countries and Badawi’s denouncing Islam through his Free Saudi Liberals website rewarded him a sentence for seven years in prison and 600 lashes. Cyber bullying damages the victims’ lives and among victims are teenagers. It affects the life of a victim because it can lead to serious cases of anxiety, depression, and even suicide. Victims of cyber bullying are more likely to have a low self-esteem and self-confidence causing them to overthink things that, in worst-case scenarios, they’d possibly commit suicide. More often than not, such negative effects go unnoticed because victims feel embarrassed that they are being bullied or afraid of further bullying. B. Privacy Violation

There are several ways that advertisers invade media privacy and takes advantage of the data in social media to find their target for their ad. One common way is data scraping where they track people’s activities online and gather personal data from social media. It is the research companies which use the data to design ad campaigns. Another is the Facebook application that leak personal data. They leak personal information and sell them to advertising and internet tracking companies. The “leakage” works this way – at the installation, you are to accept certain terms, and when you click “Allow,” they will receive an “Access Token”. Some apps leak these tokens, allowing access to chat history and photos. Examples of apps that have been found leaking data are Farmville and Family Tree. C. Virtual Intimacy

The internet allows fast exchange of information among people across the world. Some people believe that internet can give a full access to information. By these, telecommunications has led to computer-mediated communication or CMS, a means of communication that uses computers to deliver messages. There are two types of CMC, the asynchronous, which refers to emails and network which a person can send a message to another person’s computer; the other type, the synchronous occurs when there is an “in-person” communication. Examples of this are video conference and the Internet Relay Chat (IRC). People are making friends, colleagues, lovers, and enemies on the internet. Relationships formed on the internet aren’t really real, not like relationships in the real world. A powerful way that people connect to each other is through words. In the beginning, cyberspace relationships (CSR) relied mostly on language conveyed through typed text. The interaction can be asynchronous. You can respond whenever you want. The structure of the internet allows people to find others who share specialized interests. People tend to be attracted to others who share interest with them. However, it may be hard to find others who share one’s interest in one’s local area. It is evident that individuals use internet as a means of forming close and meaningful new relationships. It may also be helpful who have difficulty in facing face-to-face situations because of low self-esteem. D. Distraction

People can navigate through webpages flawlessly, thanks to search engines. Internet gives the world a variety of accessible means of communication. There are different social media networks, with Facebook gaining the most number of users, and most of these are students. Students devote themselves to social media and use them continuously. Social media take people’s lives away, without the person knowing it. People usually allot five minutes to check their Facebook, but that five minutes turn to 20 minutes, and then 40 minutes. They sometimes focus on checking social media, letting their lives stop to scroll through people’s lives. In 2010, the Kaiser Family Foundation reported that children ages eight (8) to 18 spend averagely 7 or more hours in social media and internet per day. Social media has become even more accessible to everyone with smartphones and laptops that could connect to the internet. The internet is an easy way for people to escape their reality and create an altered image of them online. It provides an escape that becomes increasingly distracting the more time one puts into it. With 845 million users, Facebook have made negative impacts on students’ grades and performances. It is clear that most students aren’t able to control their absorption of Facebook and it is greatly affecting their personality and studying habits. Students check their friends’ status, photos and comments that are posted. Many surveys have been conducted that social networks are the reasons for the downfall of students’ grade and academic performances. Twitter and Facebook distract students when they need to review for tests or to write papers. The distraction is called “continuous partial attention” (Conley, 2011). It proves that students cannot focus in only one task; they also need to do something else at the same moment. E. Social Isolation and Withdrawal

Social isolation concerns the objective characteristics of a situation and refers to the absence of relationship with others. Persons with a very small number of meaningful ties are, by definition, socially isolated (Gierveld, Tilburg, and Dykstra, 486). Everyone is lonely but fearful of intimacy (Turkle, 1).

Technology is seductive when what it offers meets our human vulnerabilities (Turkle, 1). With the presence of virtual network in this technological era, people would rather use computers and mobile gadgets to have conversations with their fellow humans instead of talking to them face-to-face. Most people tend to rely more to the inanimate because they fear the risks of miscommunication. Social media has made the society “expect more from technology and less from each other” (Turkle, xxii). The purpose of any new technology and media should be to provide a tool that enhances our lives and not to make it a lot worse. But the thing with Facebook and MySpace, examples of social networking sites, is that they do not seem to have positive effects to a lot of people. Both of these social networks requires you to send a request to someone then wait to be accepted. Usually, you get notified; if nothing comes, you feel like that person just ignored your request and feel somewhat down. In other situations, you may find yourself scrolling through your news feeds and you see that someone’s photo is getting many likes. Then suddenly, jealousy hits you square on the face. "As simplistic as it sounds, turn it off." That's what U.T. South western’s Dr. Thomas Van Hoose says. The shadow of depression will more likely be swaying behind you if you keep on mixing isolation with negative attitudes. "They may assume that one, 'They don't like me,' 'There's something wrong with me,' 'I'm not good enough,' just like they would in a real peer group," Dr. Van Hoose says. Comparing yourself to someone else is never really healthy, so professionals suggest that you turn that monitor off, go out and try to have some real fun with your real friends. Even more, psychologists say that there’s nothing wrong with social websites, but if you think your social life is being dragged down six feet underground, you might want to start planning to turn the odds in your favor. F. Health-Related Problems

Internet overuse can lead to weight gain. Carpal tunnel syndrome, dry eyes, migraine, back aches, decline in personal hygiene and fitness are other symptoms of internet overuse. Depression is also linked to internet overuse. Researchers found out that participants who had shown signs of internet overuse engage in sites devoted to pornography, gaming, social networking and chat rooms. They concluded that internet addicts use sites for replacing real-life socializing. Evidence also suggests that internet addiction lead to sleep disturbances; adolescents experience sleep deprivation because instead of sleeping earlier at night, they tend to choose spending more time online. V. Conclusion

Truly, social media has made life more worth-living for it has offered a large number of possibilities for an individual to aim for prosperity and communal improvement. But if, God forbids, everyone ends up being negligent and making hasty decisions, the once steady trajectory path to world unison may suddenly get bumpy and worst-case scenario, we may never get to reach the silver linings ever again. If they happen to do something unintelligible in the virtual world that now exists in every human’s life, the possibilities of them causing acts of hostility against others and bringing pure humiliation to themselves are far wider than they could ever imagine, and it could be witnessed by millions of people having access with the internet. Venturing in the wide spectrum of social media uses is never a bad thing. No one deserves a life where one lives under a rock; coping up with all the technological advancements being developed would save an individual from succumbing to tech-idiocy. People from all walks of life just have to be more careful that before they take a step, they have to do seventy-seven-times worth of thinking before clicking.
