Things I Learned In Summer School
In summer school, we all learned a lot of different things such as writing, reading and doing annotation work. Everyone one needs to learn how to do this all because you are not always going to have someone there to translate or read to you and tell you what is say. Reading and Writing are two of the most important things to learn about because in this world you are going to have to read something or write things to other people and what if you do not know how to do that?. Then you would be screwed. Writing, this is something that is mainly used to whatever town, city, state and everyone needs to know how to do that. At first I did not like writing essay at all because you had to have 500 or more words in the essay and all have 5 paragraphs. …show more content…
I only had one way to see reading but now that my teacher had taught me how to see things in a different way than that what I did and it helped out a lot. If people did not understand how to read then it would be horrible because in this world you are going to have to read every day no matter what you are doing. The third thing that I learn in doing was annotation because at first I did not know what it was because people would say to “Spark note” on a book and I did not know. Until this summer school program had taught me what it was and what it was used for and now I kind of got ahold of how to do this annotation work. Annotating is not that bad it is better than writing more than a summary. Doing annotations in a better way to do your work in because you would be organized. Doing this summer school program is a lot better than actually doing the real school because it would take most of my school year to pass a class and here it took me like 5 weeks to do it and now I am passing this class. In here they teach you so many other ways to do things and how to look at things in a different perspective. I would rather do summer school again for another class because it is a lot better in summer school than the actual

I read the article “10 Things Middle Schoolers Think you Should Know” by Rachel Vail. There are a few connections that I made. One connection that I made was when she wrote,”I like it when you make use get up and move, it makes it fun and easy to remember”. I relate to that because I most enjoy class activities. Also, it helps me remember the assignment. When we do school activities it helps me understand and not be confused when the test comes. For example, In my teacher’s class when made posters to help us remember the math formula, I extremely agree with her on this statement…

In the beginning of the year we read a great book called Freak the Mighty. As we read the book our teacher taught us how to annotate and take notes on what we thought was important. Our teacher explained to us through a study strategies handout that broke down the form of annotating. We also talked about it more in class so we would have a better understanding of how to improve our skills for high school and college.…

As I write this, I have my four year old niece sitting next to me saying, “Wow, you have a lot of drawing on your page!” All I can do is laugh to myself and think that was once me, not knowing the meaning of each word and innocently intrigued by the simple presence of words on a paper. This interest would soon turn into the curiosity to read. Hoping to read as gracefully as my mother when she read bible stories before my twin sister and I would drift off to sleep, I was devastated to find out I didn’t read as well as the other children. In fact, I had to be pulled from my reading class to a remedial class with one on one interaction between the teacher and student. As disappointed as I was then, I’ll…

I want to participate in Summer of a Lifetime because I want to experience something that I don’t ordinarily get the opportunity to do. I feel that if I’m around new people, in a new environment, in a different atmosphere, then I’d be able to figure out what I want to pursue in my college career and beyond. I also feel as though, it’d motivate me to do better in my academics because the Summer of a Lifetime program will show me that I can be a student in the college of my choosing if I continue to better myself athletically and academically. My strengths as a student is that I will never be satisfied with being just “Okay”, I…

While I have achieved many goals throughout the weeks in this course, one main change that is immediately noticeable is my increased development in reading comprehension. After only completing the very first module, I had a better understand of what I read and how to properly read it! “Annotating [made] me more aware of what I [was] reading. It cause[d] my thoughts to question the author and to engage their words. It also cause[d] me to go back over the passage to better understand what I read.” The idea of annotating and pinpointing the subject and thesis and meaning of a passage seems so basic; none-the-less, I had never done it prior to the course and afterwards, it completely opened up a new world of understanding. I have since used the process of annotating in most of my writing and revision tasks. I have been better able to analyze my topics and evaluate my own writing. I have been able to focus more on locating/creating a…

Learning how to read was a difficult task for me because I never was the reading type. My mother always pushed me to be the best I could be and reading wasn't one. Having a strict well educated mother who puts my education above anything else has its perks. Every night she would read stories to me. Most of my reading came from when my mom would drive me to my dads work. She also made me read to her to help me pronounce words and improve my grammar skills. I'll never forget saying the alphabet over and over again, sounding out each letter's sound.…
